ERIE - Redshirt junior tailback
Zach Krise ran 184 yards, had 222 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns to lead East Stroudsburg University to a 38-21 win on Saturday night at Gannon.
Krise followed up his 107-yard, two touchdown performance in last week's 19-6 win at Virginia Union to put together the Warriors' first back-to-back 100-yard rushing games since Derek Lucas in 2004. He carried 29 times and scored two rushing touchdowns, caught five passes and had another score through the air after carrying 26 times and catching a pass last week.
Redshirt junior quarterback Matt Marshall was 20-for-28 for 269 yards and three touchdowns and hit redshirt junior Jeff Giglio seven times for 140 yards and a 10-yard TD late in the second quarter that gave the Warriors a 28-14 halftime lead.
ESU took control of the game with two scores in a 20-second stretch early in the second quarter. Krise scored on a 14-yard pass from Marshall with 13:27 left, Gannon tailback Jon Richardson lost a fumble that was recovered by junior cornerback David Castillo at the 32-yard line and Marshall hit redshirt freshman wide receiver Jordan Hallman for a touchdown on the next play put ESU ahead 21-7.
Gannon twice cut the Warriors' advantage to one touchdown, the second time on a one-yard run by Richardson with 3:01 left in the third quarter, before ESU put together a five play, 60-yard drive capped by an 18-yard run by Krise that made the score 35-21. Redshirt junior Drew Reinhard added a 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter.
Richardson ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, but the Warriors limited Gannon quarterback Zach Boedicker to a 10-for-23 performance for 120 yards and two interceptions. Boedicker was 16-for-22 for 222 yards in Gannon's 35-34 win over Lake Erie last Thursday.
Redshirt junior outside linebacker Matt Freed had 11 tackles, junior outside linebacker Mark Kalo had eight tackles and a sack and redshirt senior defensive end Matthew Faas also had a sack. Redshirt sophomore linebacker Taylor Cave and senior safety Nicholas Artinger both had interceptions, redshirt junior defensive end Jeff Case forced a fumble and ESU created three turnovers.
ESU outgained Gannon 456-270, running for 187 yards and throwing for 269, and compiled 25 first downs and 33:56 in time of possession. The Warriors have won their last 12 games when running for at least 140 yards.
ESU will take its 2-0 record into next Saturday's date with Clarion at 7 p.m. to cap a tripleheader at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The men's and women's soccer teams will be in action at noon and 2 p.m. followed by the football home opener.
