KUTZTOWN – The East Stroudsburg University track & field program won 18 events at the Kutztown Invitational, led by freshman Ian Melhorn (55, 200), freshman Frank Fezza (800, mile) and senior Paul Wagner (shot put, weight throw), to open the spring 2010 semester on Friday night.
Wagner broke his own school record in the weight throw with a mark of 62-3 1/4, almost a foot past his previous mark of 61-4 3/4 that he set last year. He had a throw of 49-6 1/2 in the shot put.
Melhorn turned in a time of 6.67 in the finals of the 55m dash and won the 200 meters in 22.88 and Fezza clocked in at 2:02.18 in the 800 and 4:28.38 in the mile as the Warriors won 12 individual events and two relays on the men's side.
Other winners for ESU on the track were senior Chris Reddick in the 400m (50.37), junior Negus Graham in the 500m (1:06.97), freshman Mike Saparito in the 1000m (2:40.53) and senior Rusty Smith in the 55m hurdles (7.58). Senior Drew Miller took the triple jump at 46-11 to join Wagner in the field events.
The Warriors' 4x400 relay team of junior Greg Pammer, Graham, sophomore Steve Greer and Reddick was first in 3:31.01, and Saparito anchored the 4x800 relay squad to a time of 8:19.45 along with freshman Ben Sweet, sophomore Sam Janssen and junior Mahmoud Aldeen.
Junior Jasmine Johnson won the women's 400m in 1:00.62, freshman Lauren Ventrella captured the 55m hurdles in 8.57 seconds and junior Lynn Mayer won the high jump with a mark of 5-7. Senior Niki Pasquarella was second in the mile (5:39.01) and senior Janelle Smith and sophomore Devyn Emerich were second and third in the high jump, both at 5-4 1/2.
ESU also won both multi events. Senior Trina Carito won the women's pentathlon with 3,199 points, while senior Colin Feeney took the men's heptathlon with 4,324 points.
Finishing second on the men's side were freshman Jesus Maldonado in the 200m (23.37), Aldeen in the 500m (1:08.78), Janssen in the 1000m (2:40.58), freshman James Hazlett in the triple jump (43-10) and senior Matthew Gallup in the pole vault (15-1).
ESU is in action at the Bucknell Heptagonal in Lewisburg next Saturday.
