Box Score
EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior forward
Mike Tobin had his second double-double in three games with 13 points and 10 rebounds, three other Warriors scored in double figures and No. 24 East Stroudsburg University rebounded from its first loss of the season with a dominating 74-47 victory over Shippensburg on Saturday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Senior guard
Andy Heimbach scored 11 points, all in the first half, and freshmen forwards
Terrance King and
Duane Johnson both had 10 for the Warriors (14-1, 1-1), who lost 87-84 at No. 3 Kutztown in their PSAC East opener on Wednesday. Heimbach will enter Wednesday's game at Bloomsburg with 985 career points and will look to become the 23rd 1,000-point scorer in ESU history.
Tobin is averaging 16.0 points and 8.8 rebounds over the last four games, including a career-high 20 points to go with 10 rebounds for his first career double-double last Sunday at Edinboro. He led an ESU effort on the glass that produced a 60-38 advantage, the first time the Warriors have grabbed 60 rebounds in a game since 2007-08.
ESU was playing at home as a nationally-ranked team for the second time in school history – the first was a 72-63 win over Millersville on January 29, 1992 – and went on a 20-3 run to start the second half to pull away from a 10-point lead and put the Raiders away.
Heimbach closed the first half with his third three-pointer of the game, the 200th of his career to extend his school record, and the Warriors blew out Shippensburg (7-8, 0-2) to start the second half. Ship scored the first points of the half, a jumper by Dane Lauber, before King dunked off a pass from Tobin and had an offensive rebound and putback to start a 20-1 stretch.
Johnson's three-pointer made it a 20-point game (48-28) with 15:30 left and went 4-for-4 from the line, sophomore forward
Eric Bryan had a tip-in basket and freshman forward
Marcus Brown had a steal and dunk to finish the six-minute long run with the score 55-28. The 27-point lead at that point and the final whistle was ESU's largest of the game, while Shippensburg never got closer than 23 the rest of the way.
Tobin had 13 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal to lead the Warriors' effort at both ends of the floor. King and Brown (six points) both had seven rebounds and Bryan had six points and six boards.
Senior guard
Robby Pines hit a three-pointer and had four rebounds, six assists and three steals. Pines turned the ball over just one time, giving him 99 assists and 28 turnovers on the season. His 6.6 assists per game and 3.5 assist-to-turnover ratio should both rank in the top 10 in Division II next week.
The Warriors are at Bloomsburg on Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off and travel to Cheyney next Saturday. Their next action at Koehler Fieldhouse will be Wednesday, January 27 against Mansfield at 8 p.m.
