ESU Basketball Program Notes vs. Mansfield

WOMEN'S GAME - Mansfield 47, ESU 44

THE MATCH-UP:
East Stroudsburg University hosts PSAC East opponent Mansfield in tonight's women's basketball match-up at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors are 3-3 on their home floor this season, including a 58-55 win for their first PSAC East win of the year on Jan. 16. The Mounties enter with an 0-4 PSAC East record and have taken on Shippensburg, Cheyney, Kutztown and West Chester.

LAST TIME OUT: Stephanie Orji scored 24 of her career-high 31 points in the first half and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead Cheyney to a 76-52 win over ESU on Saturday at Cope Hall. Orji scored 13 straight points for the Wolves midway through the first half and Angel Stephens had 12 of her 16 points in the second half.

So. F Jennifer Scherer tied her season and career-high with 13 points for the Warriors, going 5-for-7 from the field, and added eight rebounds. Sr. G Mel Villano and Sr. F DeAnna Rayam scored 12 points each. Rayam went over the 900-point mark for her career and enters tonight's game with 910 points.

PINK ZONE:
ESU will hold its annual WBCA “Pink Zone” event when the Warriors host West Chester on Saturday at 1 p.m. All proceeds raised will benefit the PA Breast Cancer Coalition, a local non-profit organization, with funds helping to support breast cancer survivors and their families in Pennsylvania. The Warriors will be wearing pink t-shirts for warm-ups and donning pink socks donated by Schuylkill Valley Sports, and “Pink Zone” t-shirts will be available for purchase.


MEN'S GAME - ESU 67, Mansfield 65 (OT)

THE MATCH-UP:
No. 22 ESU and Mansfield meet in a match-up of two of the three teams in the PSAC East with 3-1 records. The Warriors' only loss in their 16-1 start is an 87-84 setback at Kutztown in their PSAC East opener, while the Mounties knocked off KU 94-87 at home last Wednesday before falling 89-75 at West Chester on Saturday. ESU is 16-1 for the third time in school history (1941-42, 1926-27).

LAST TIME OUT: ESU used a 9-0 run late in the game and a 25-for-31 performance from the foul line in the second half to earn a 77-73 win at Cheyney. Sr. G Andy Heimbach scored 11 points, including the 1,000th of his career, and hit a jumper with 3:25 left to give ESU a 66-62 lead after Cheyney rallied from a 10-point deficit.

Last Wednesday at Bloomsburg, the Warriors overcame a 15-point deficit in the final 7:35 of regulation in a 101-96 (2OT) win. Sr. G Robby Pines scored a career-high 18 points, eight in overtime, and is 10th in Division II with 6.5 assists per game. Fr. F Duane Johnson had 10 points and 6 rebounds and averaged 6.5 points and 7.5 boards for the week to earn his third PSAC East Freshman of the Week award.
