THE MATCH-UP: East Stroudsburg University plays the 750th game in the 83-year history of the varsity football program with a trip to Long Island to take on C.W. Post. Today's game also marks the 450th game on the sidelines for head coach
Denny Douds, putting him at the 60-percent mark for the history of the program.
Douds will coach his 382nd game as head coach and was an assistant for 68 games from 1966-73. ESU is 272-172-5 (.611) in Douds' 449 games entering this weekend - 227-151-3 as head coach, and 45-21-2 as an assistant.
DEMANDING SCHEDULE: The Warriors have lost five straight games to teams with a combined record of 23-7, and are in the midst of the fifth five-game losing streak in program history and the first since the first five games of the 1998 season. ESU's first four losses - IUP, California, West Chester and Bloomsburg - came against the top two teams in both divisions of the PSAC preseason polls, and Kutztown improved to 6-0 for the first time in school history last Saturday. The Warriors' strength of schedule of their first six opponents is the 13th-toughest of 136 schools in the Division II rankings (.643, 18-10 - doesn't include games vs. ESU).
THE SERIES: ESU is 7-3 in its 10 meetings all-time against C.W. Post in a series that has seen an average of 79 points on the scoreboard in the last five games. Last year's 42-28 loss ended a five-game winning streak in the series for the Warriors, who won 48-42 in their last trip to Hickox Field. The two schools played five straight years from 1978-82, with ESU holding a 3-2 edge, and the series resumed in 2004 with ESU's 28-13 win. They met twice in 2005 - the Warriors won 66-49 on the road in the regular season, then earned a 55-28 win in the NCAA Playoffs to advance to the national semifinals for the first time in school history.
LAST TIME OUT: R-Sr. QB
Matt Marshall led three fourth-quarter scoring drives to nearly bring the Warriors back from a 38-10 deficit, but Kutztown held on for a 38-31 win on Homecoming at Eiler-Martin Stadium. Marshall was 37-for-57 for 382 yards and 4 TDs, and went 16-for-21 for 185 yards and 3 TDs in the fourth quarter as ESU rallied after Kutztown returned a fumble 38 yards for a TD on the first play of the period. ESU recovered an onside kick with 3:30 remaining but Kutztown called timeout just before the attempt. The Golden Bears recovered the second kick and picked up one first down to run out the clock.
THE HEAD COACHES: Denny Douds (Slippery Rock '63) holds the PSAC record for career wins with a 227-151-3 record in his 37th season as head football coach at ESU. He is in his 45th season at ESU overall and is one of five active coaches in Division II, and one of just 18 coaches in all of college football, with at least 200 career victories. He has led the Warriors to nine PSAC titles and four NCAA Playoff appearances. For more information on Coach Douds and the ESU coaching staff, please see page 12 of the game notes.
Bryan Collins (St. John's '87) has a 97-41 record in his 13th season as head coach at C.W. Post and also serves as the Athletic Director.
