NEW YORK, N.Y. – Seniors Matthew Gallup (pole vault) and Chris Reddick (200m) broke their own school records and the men's 4x400m relay record fell for the second straight week as East Stroudsburg University competed at the Lafayette-Rider Winter Games on Friday night at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.
Gallup, freshman Frank Fezza (3000m), senior Drew Miller (triple jump), senior Paul Wagner (weight throw), senior Trina Carito (high jump) and freshman Lauren Ventrella (60m hurdles) all won their events for the Warriors, along with the men's 4x400 relay.
Reddick ran a time of 21.81 on the banked track at the Armory to break his record of 21.86 that he set at last year's PSAC Championships at Koehler Fieldhouse. Reddick finished third on Friday night, with junior Negus Graham fourth (22.00) and freshman Ian Melhorn finishing eighth (22.30). Graham broke Reddick's 400m record with a time of 48.83 at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory last Friday.
Reddick, Graham and Melhorn formed three-quarters of the record-setting 4x400 relay that finished in 3:15.74. Reddick led off with a 48.0 second split, followed by Melhorn (49.9), junior Greg Pammer (49.3) and Graham, who anchored in 48.2. The same quartet ran a time of 3:19.15 last week at the DeSchriver Invitational, with Reddick and Graham trading off the lead and anchor responsibilities. Both times meet the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard and should move the Warriors up the national performance list after standing sixth last week.
Gallup cleared 16-2 3/4 in the pole vault to better his NCAA provisional and school record mark height of 16-0 3/4 that he set at Lehigh's John Covert Classic on January 22. He won the DeSchriver title at 16-0 last Sunday.
A fourth school record nearly fell in the men's 3000m, where Fezza turned in a performance of 8:37.79, just over three seconds off the 21-year old school record of 8:34.54 turned in by Jim Lauck in 1989. Fezza won the 3000 by two-hundredths of a second over Gregg Cantwell of Delaware.
Miller and Wagner continued to dominate their field events for the Warriors. Miller, a provisional qualifier, won the triple jump at 47-10 3/4 and was fourth in the long jump with a season best of 22-3 1/4. Wagner had a throw of 62-1 3/4 to win the weight throw and finished third in the shot put at 49-4 1/2. Wagner reached the NCAA automatic standard in the weight throw last week with a mark of 63-7 1/2.
Carito won the high jump at 5-5, becoming the fourth ESU women's high jumper to win the event this year. Senior Janelle Smith won the DeSchriver last Sunday and junior Lynn Mayer and sophomore Devyn Emerich have also won a pair of titles.
Ventrella's time of 9.01 seconds in the 60m hurdles was four-hundredths off her NCAA provisional and school record time of 8.97 that she ran three weeks ago at Bucknell.
Junior Jasmine Johnson also had one of the Warriors top performances on the track, running a time of 25.66 in the 200 meters to finish fourth in a field of 43 runners. Johnson ran the 200 for the first time this season after setting the school record in the 400 (57.35) on the same track last Friday at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational.
On the men's side, senior Rusty Smith was second in the 60m hurdles in 8.10 seconds to better his NCAA provisional time in the event. Freshman Kyle Soden was second in the high jump at 6-4 1/2.
ESU heads to the Keough Invitational at Haverford College next Friday before competing at the PSAC Indoor Championships at Edinboro in two weeks.
