EAST STROUDSBURG – Seniors
Robby Pines and
DeAnna Rayam were named as East Stroudsburg University's representatives on the Lehigh Valley Small College Basketball Teams of the Year at Thursday's luncheon at Starter's Restaurant in Bethlehem.
Pines (Telford/Souderton) and Rayam (Bethlehem/Freedom) were recognized along with players from six other area schools – Cedar Crest, Delaware Valley, DeSales, Kutztown, Moravian and Muhlenberg. Kate Harrison (Moravian) and Kelly McKeon (Muhlenberg) were named the women's co-players of the year, and Stephen Dennis (Kutztown) was the men's player of the year.
Pines has led the Warriors' men's basketball team to the sixth 20-win season and the highest national ranking in school history while starting all 24 games at point guard. He leads a deep squad with 30 minutes per game and leads the PSAC and ranks eighth in Division II with 6.5 assists per game and is tied for 13th in the nation with 2.5 steals per game. He is averaging 8.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game and is fourth on the team in both categories.
Pines was recognized as ESU's “Unsung Hero” at December's luncheon after ranking sixth in Division II with a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio as a junior. He moved into the school's single season and career top 10 lists for assists last week, entered the season list for steals with five on Wednesday at Mansfield and is just seven assists shy of the career top 10 list – all impressive for a player who made just three starts entering his senior season.
Rayam leads ESU's women's team in nearly every category, including scoring (14.7 ppg), rebounding (6.2 rpg) and assists (58), and has been the top scorer in 18 of the first 24 games this year. She has reached double figures in all but two games, including the first 19, and had a pair of 20-point games before exploding for 32 points – 22 in the second half – against Kutztown on Monday.
The career-high game allowed Rayam to become the 13th 1,000-point scorer in school history when she led the Warriors with 18 points in a 68-63 win at Mansfield on Wednesday night. She has also reached 400 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 steals in her career and is one of four players with 100 career three-pointers at ESU.
Both teams have three games left in the regular season, including home games against Cheyney on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and Millersville on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Warriors' seniors will be honored before the tip-off with the Marauders.
