MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. – Christian Saveri had a brilliant start to his senior season, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning, before UMass-Lowell rallied to tie the game and outlasted East Stroudsburg University for a 3-2 win in 13 innings of the season opener for both schools late into Saturday night.

The Warriors and River Hawks got off the field just before midnight when Felix Martinez stole home with two outs in the 13th inning. Neither team generated much offense, as ESU had nine hits and UMass-Lowell tallied just five hits in 13 innings.

Saveri got 19 outs before UMass-Lowell broke up the no-hitter and scored two runs on a throwing error with two outs to tie the game at 2-2. Saveri struck out nine in 7.2 innings, allowing three hits, and didn't walk a batter in the eighth start of his career. The left-hander was a second team All-PSAC East reliever last season after setting the school record with 22 appearances and recording 57 strikeouts against just nine walks in 50.0 innings of work.

ESU scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take its 2-0 lead. Sophomore 2B Ryan Guarino doubled, advanced on the throw and scored on a sacrifice fly by redshirt sophomore 3B Jake Griesemer in the fifth, and senior C Brendan O'Connor doubled and scored on an RBI single by sophomore SS Evan Gallagher in the sixth.

Freshman 1B Brian Ernst (2-for-4) and Griesemer (2-for-5) had multi-hit games for the Warriors in the season opener.

Sophomore Chad Jacobson went 2.1 innings and struck out four in relief of Saveri, and sophomore Ryan Beck threw the final 2.2 innings on the mound.
