EDINBORO – Senior Paul Wagner broke the PSAC overall and meet record in the weight throw, senior Trina Carito won the pentathlon for her second career multi-event title and senior Chris Reddick shattered school records in the 200m and 400m, including an NCAA automatic qualifying time, to highlight the first day of the PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships for East Stroudsburg University.

Wagner won his fifth career PSAC title and third straight in the weight throw with a mark of 66-3 3/4 to break his own meet record and the overall conference record of 63-7 3/4 that was set by Kutztown's John Frownfelter in 2000. He improved his NCAA automatic qualifying mark and will look for his second All-America honor at the NCAA Division II Championships in two weeks

Carito turned in an NCAA provisional qualifying performance in the pentathlon, scoring 3,498 points to win the event by 127 points over California freshman Farath Raphael. Carito sealed her victory with a time of 2:25.87 to win the 800 meters, was second in the long jump (17-6 3/4) and the high jump (5-4 1/4) and placed fifth of the 14 competitors in the shot put with a mark of 32-10 1/4.

She ran the 60m hurdles in 9.57 seconds, the seventh-fastest time in the first event of the day, and put together an impressive effort in the final four events to earn the third PSAC championship of her career. Carito won the indoor triple jump and the outdoor heptathlon as a sophomore and went to the NCAA outdoor championships that spring.

Reddick was last year's co-Men's Track Athlete of the Meet and put on a show in the prelims to gear up for Sunday's finals. He lowered his own school record in the 200 meters by nearly a half-second, running a time of 21.33 seconds to finish three-hundredths off the NCAA automatic standard. His time of 21.81 stood for two weeks after running 21.86 at last year's PSAC Championships at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Reddick was even more impressive in the 400m. He ran a time of 48.15, significantly below the NCAA automatic standard of 48.50, and will be the first ESU men's sprinter to compete at the NCAA indoor championships. He was second in the 400m (49.11) at last year's championships and will run in the finals of both events on Sunday.

Junior Negus Graham will join Reddick in the finals of both sprints, entering the 400m with the third-best time (48.90) and the 200m with the fourth-best time (21.98) in the prelims. Graham set the previous 400m record in 48.83 earlier this year. Sophomore Ian Melhorn gives ESU three finalists in the 200 with a time of 22.10 in the prelims. Junior Greg Pammer was 10th in the 400, just outside of qualifying for the eight-man field in the finals, with a season best of 49.78.

Two more school records fell on Saturday as well. The men's 4x800m relay finished second with a time of 7:50.11 to edge the record of 7:50.91 that was set in 2004. Freshman Mike Saparito, sophomore Sam Janssen and freshmen Ben Sweet and Frank Fezza were just over a second behind Slippery Rock's time of 7:48.80.

Junior Asher Ashfield took the final spot in qualifying for the 60m dash with a time of 7.06, breaking a three-way tie for the record at 7.09 that he held with teammate Andrew McCloskey (2010) and former teammate Jeff McClenton (2008).

ESU had two men finish fourth in their events and several others qualify for Sunday's finals. Senior Matthew Gallup cleared 15-7 1/4 in the pole vault, the first time since his freshman year that he has not won the conference title after four straight combined indoor and outdoor championships. Senior Drew Miller was fourth in the long jump at 23-3 1/4, a season-best by a foot, and will defend his back-to-back titles in the triple jump on Sunday.

Senior Rusty Smith, the defending champion in the 60m hurdles, is the second seed entering the finals with a time of 8.22 seconds. Freshmen Corey Young (8.26) and Kyle Soden (8.37) also qualified for the finals for the Warriors.

In the men's heptathlon, senior Colin Feeney is fifth (2,662) and sophomore Dan Johnson is sixth (2,554) through the first four events. Feeney had the top mark in the shot put (37-10), was third in the 60m dash (7.48) and fifth in the long jump (21-2), while Johnson had the fourth-best mark in the high jump at 6-4 3/4. Feeney was also sixth in the open pole vault at 14-7 1/2.

On the women's side, junior Jasmine Johnson and freshman Lauren Ventrella had standout days on the track. Ventrella enters Sunday as the No. 1 seed in the 60m hurdles after turning in a time of 8.99 seconds, two-hundredths off her school record and NCAA provisional qualifying time earlier this year. She is seeded third in the 60m dash in 7.95 seconds.

Johnson was second in the 400m (57.61) and third in the 200m (25.70) in qualifying for Sunday's finals. She set the school record in the 400 (57.35) three weeks ago and will score in the indoor 200 for the first time in her career.

Senior Amanda Sines had a four-foot season best in the weight throw to finish third with a throw of 50-0 1/2, just short of her school record of 50-4 from 2007. Senior Emily Carothers was seventh with another season best of 48-6 3/4.

ESU stands third on the men's side with 33 points through the first six events. Lock Haven and Shippensburg are tied at the top with 39 points. The women are sixth with 18 points going into Sunday's action.

Complete results for all of ESU's athletes in the finals and prelims of their events are below. The 2010 PSAC Championships conclude at Edinboro's Mike S. Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Dome on Sunday with the first event scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
