Complete Results / Saturday recap

EDINBORO – East Stroudsburg University came with a half-point of claiming its first-ever PSAC men's track and field championship as Lock Haven edged the Warriors, 135-134.5, in the closest margin in conference history on Sunday at Edinboro.

The Warriors' men's and women's teams set six school records, recorded two NCAA automatic and eight NCAA provisional qualifying performances on Sunday. A total of 10 school records fell over the weekend.

The ESU women were third with 80.75 points, and both teams set school records for points since the PSAC indoor championships were first held in 2002. Shippensburg won the women's title by a 173.25-154.5 margin over Slippery Rock.

Senior Chris Reddick was named the PSAC Men's Track and Overall Athlete of the Meet after winning the 200 meters and finishing second in the 400 while running two of the fastest times in the country.

He won the 200 in 21.24 seconds, an NCAA automatic qualifying time, and ran the 400 in 48.17, just off his time of 48.15 in the prelims to meet the NCAA provisional standard. Reddick was the men's co-Track Athlete of the Meet a year ago after winning the 200 and placing second in the 400 with a pair of school-record times that were shattered this season.

Junior Negus Graham was third in both the 200 (21.97) and 400 (48.19) and improved on his NCAA provisional qualifying time of 48.83 which briefly stood as the school record this year.

Reddick, sophomore Ian Melhorn, junior Greg Pammer and Graham won the 4x400m relay, the final event of the weekend, with a time of 3:16.39, but Lock Haven's second-place finish (3:19.18) was enough to give the Bald Eagles their fifth PSAC title and first since 2007.

Senior Drew Miller won his fifth career PSAC title in the triple jump with an automatic mark of 50-1 3/4, just off the school record of 50-4 1/4 set by three-time All-American Lenny Jenkins in 1975.

Senior Paul Wagner followed his PSAC record in the weight throw (66-3 3/4) on Saturday with his sixth career conference championship after winning the shot put with a mark of 52-5 1/4. He has an NCAA automatic qualifying mark in the weight throw and is a provisional qualifier in the shot put.

Freshman Frank Fezza broke Jim Lauck's 21-year old school record in the 3000m with a time of 8:30.45 and finished sixth, with all six men breaking the conference record in the event.

Sophomore Dan Johnson set the men's heptathlon record with 4,654 points that was held by teammate Colin Feeney. Johnson finished fifth and Feeney was sixth with 4,534 points.

The Warriors' women were led by two individual champions, junior high jumper Lynn Mayer and freshman sprinter/hurdler Lauren Ventrella, and junior sprinter Jasmine Johnson, who was second in both the 200 and 400.

Mayer, a two-time All-American, won her first career PSAC title by clearing 5-7 to match her NCAA provisional mark from earlier this season and led five Warriors who scored in the high jump. Senior Janelle Smith, also a provisional qualifier, was fourth and sophomore Devyn Emerich was fifth, with both clearing 5-5. Senior Trina Carito won the pentathlon title for her third career PSAC championship on Saturday and was sixth in the high jump at 5-3, and senior Emily Hollick also went over 5-3 to tie for seventh.

Ventrella won the 60m hurdles and set a pair of school records. Her time of 8.94 in the 60m hurdles lowered her own record and NCAA provisional time of 8.97, and she finished third in the 60m dash and set the school record in 7.79 seconds. Theresa Manera held the record of 7.82 since 2005.

Johnson broke her own school record in the 400 with a provisional time of 56.70 seconds, shaving nearly two-thirds of a second from her mark of 57.35 that she set three weeks ago. She turned in a time of 25.47 seconds in the 200. Ventrella, Johnson, freshman Tara Getz and Carito placed fourth in the 4x400m relay in 3:59.65.

The Warriors had 11 other men's athletes score in their events on Sunday that nearly gave them the PSAC championship. Junior Asher Ashfield was seventh in the 60m dash, Melhorn placed sixth in the 200m and freshman Mike Saparito (3rd) and sophomore Sam Janssen (7th) both scored in the 800m.

Freshmen Corey Young (5th) and Kyle Soden (6th) were followed by senior Rusty Smith (8th) in the 60m hurdles, and three athletes also scored in the high jump – senior Shane Burrows (t-5th), Soden (7th) and Johnson (8th). Sophomore Brandon Hillman placed fifth in the triple jump.

Senior Amanda Sines was third in the weight throw on Saturday and placed eighth in the shot put to complete the scorers for ESU.

The Warriors will send at least three athletes to the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. on March 12-13. Reddick (200), Wagner (weight throw) and Miller (triple jump) are automatic qualifiers and are joined by several others who have provisional qualifying marks. The entire field will be announced on Wednesday.

Reddick (400), Negus Graham (400), Rusty Smith (60m hurdles), Matthew Gallup (pole vault), Dan Johnson (heptathlon), Wagner (shot put) and the 4x400m relay are provisional qualifiers on the men's side. Five women – Lauren Ventrella (60m hurdles), Jasmine Johnson (400), Lynn Mayer (high jump), Janelle Smith (high jump) and Trina Carito (pentathlon) – are NCAA hopefuls in their events.
