EAST STROUDSBURG – Seniors Matthew Gallup, Drew Miller and Paul Wagner all broke their own meet records and the men's 4x200 and 4x400 relays shattered school records as East Stroudsburg University hosted the 11th Annual DeSchriver Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Wagner (weight throw) reached the NCAA Division II automatic qualifier and Miller (triple jump) bettered his provisional qualifying mark. Wagner's throw of 63-7 1/2 broke his meet record from last year, school record from earlier this season and the Koehler Fieldhouse record. He also finished second in the shot put at 49-11. Miller had a mark of 48-3 1/2 to win the triple jump and was second in the long jump (22-0 3/4) and 55 meters (6.68).
Gallup went over at 16-0 to win the pole vault, which he won at 15-6 last year. He broke his own school record at 16-0 3/4, an NCAA provisional qualifying height, two weeks ago at Lehigh.
Junior Negus Graham, senior Chris Reddick and freshman Ian Melhorn contributed to both record-setting relay teams. The 4x200 relay posted a time of 1:29.09, breaking the school, meet and Koehler Fieldhouse record. Reddick ran the opening lap, followed by Melhorn, Graham and senior Rusty Smith.
In the 4x400, the Warriors' quartet of Graham, Melhorn, junior Greg Pammer and Reddick was second with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:19.15.
ESU's previous best times in the relays were 1:30.55 in the 4x200 in 2008 (Jeff McClenton, Tony Prudente, Ed Kiser, Andrew McCloskey) and 3:20.77 in the 4x400, also in 2008 (Prudente, Reddick, Pammer, Kiser).
The Warriors had six individual winners on the day – Gallup, Miller, Wagner, junior Asher Ashfield (men's 55m dash), senior Janelle Smith (women's high jump) and freshman Kyle Soden (men's high jump).
Smith led a sweep of the top three spots in the women's high jump, as senior Trina Carito and sophomore Devyn Emerich were second and third at 5-4. ESU's women finished second in four individual events – Carito in the high jump, junior Jonna Trexler in the 3000m (10:55.74), freshman Lauren Ventrella in the 55m hurdles (8.42) and senior Amanda Sines in the weight throw (45-10 1/2).
The Warriors were also second in all three of the women's relays. In the 4x200 (1:47.04), Ventrella led off, followed by junior Jasmine Johnson and freshmen Tara Getz and Lauren Hannan. Ventrella, Carito, Johnson and senior Emily Hollick ran a time of 4:00.34 in the 4x400 and Trexler, senior Jenna Fisher, freshman Corinne Fitzgerald and senior Niki Pasquarella finished in 10:03.27 in the 4x800.
Ashfield won the 55 in 6.67 seconds, followed by Miller at 6.68, to lead the Warriors' men's sprinters in open competition as Graham, Melhorn and Reddick were held out to focus on the relays.
In the distance events, freshmen Amr Aldeen (3000m, 8:55.55) and Greg Laraia (5000m, 15:37.21) both finished second. The freshman 4x800m relay team of Aldeen, Mike Saparito, Ben Sweet and Frank Fezza posted a winning time of 7:57.75, beating the team of ESU upperclassmen (junior Mahmoud Aldeen, sophomore Sam Janssen, senior Pat Carr and junior Chris Zadroga) by nearly eight seconds.
