ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Junior high jumper Lynn Mayer became the fifth three-time All-American in East Stroudsburg University track and field history and junior Negus Graham earned All-America honors in the 400 meters for the Warriors at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday.
Mayer cleared 5-8 1/2 to tie for second in high jump, the highest finish for an ESU athlete since her coach, Karen (Way) Gaita, won the NCAA outdoor championship in 1991 to finish her career as ESU's only four-time All-American.
Abby Kacsandi (Ashland) won the national title at 5-9 3/4, while Mayer tied with Jennifer Robinson (Emporia State) for second. Maegan Doyle (Grand Valley State) was fourth, also clearing 5-8 1/2 but finishing behind Mayer and Robinson on number of jumps.
Graham broke his own school and PSAC records with a time of 47.37 seconds to finish fourth in the 400. He was second in the prelims in 47.47 and is the Warriors' first All-American at a distance under 1500 meters, not including hurdlers Rusty Smith (2008-09) and Jack Goldowski (1984-85).
Josh Scott of national power St. Augustine's posted a winning time of 46.05, followed by Leford Green (Johnson C. Smith) in 46.67 and Anthony Abney (St. Augustine's) in 47.34. Green had the fastest time in the prelims in 46.98.
Graham is ESU's 18th All-American in men's track and field, while Mayer is one of 13 women to earn All-America honors. She was sixth outdoors (5-8) and tied for fifth indoors (5-7) as a freshman in 2008 and also competed at NCAA's during the outdoor season last year.
Seniors Drew Miller and Trina Carito also competed for the Warriors on Saturday. Miller was made his third appearance in the NCAA championships and was 12th in the triple jump with a mark of 47-8, while Carito placed 10th in the pentathlon with 3,337 points and also competed at nationals in the heptathlon during the 2008 outdoor season.
