TAKOMA PARK, Md. – Freshman
Nico Delerme went 4-for-4 and capped a big fourth inning with a two-run single as East Stroudsburg University beat Washington Adventist, 8-4, to salvage a doubleheader split in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.
Washington Adventist (5-5) won the opener, 16-8, to end the Warriors' seven-game winning streak before they came back to win the nightcap and move to 9-5 on the season.
Delerme's two RBI single was the final blow in a five-run fourth inning that put the first runs on the board in game two. Sophomores
Ryan Guarino and
Evan Gallagher also singled in the inning, which also included a pair of hit batters (senior
Kenny Serfass and sophomore
Carey Zimmerman) and a sacrifice fly by redshirt sophomore
Jake Griesemer.
The Warriors added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Zimmerman that scored Serfass, and went ahead 8-1 in the sixth as Gallagher hit his first career home run and Delerme and freshman
Brian Ernst cracked back-to-back doubles.
Washington Adventist closed the margin to 8-4 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth before ESU shut the door, with senior
Christian Saveri striking out the side in the seventh around a two-out double.
Sophomore
Ryan Beck improved to 2-1 on the year after going 5.0 innings and allowing two runs on three hits, with four strikeouts and two walks. Beck was charged with one of the three runs in the sixth, with sophomore
Chad Jacobson on the mound for the other two, before Saveri finished the game with his first relief appearance of the season.
Delerme's 4-for-4 performance included two of the Warriors' five doubles. Gallagher was 3-for-5 with a home run and a double and Guarino was 3-for-4 with a double. Ernst collected the other two-base hit and was 1-for-3.
In the opener, ESU held a 15-14 edge in hits but Washington Adventist capitalized on a pitching staff that issued nine walks and hit two batters, with five of the 11 runners coming around to score. The Warriors faced a 12-1 deficit through three innings with freshman
Mike Glassic absorbing most of the damage after allowing just one run on two hits in 9.0 innings in his first two career appearances.
Four Warriors had two hits, led by Serfass, who was 2-for-2 with a triple and his second home run in as many games. Junior
Bryce Muth was also 2-for-2, Gallagher went 2-for-3 and Ernst was 2-for-4.
Ernst hit his first career home run, a solo shot in the sixth, which was followed by Serfass' triple and an RBI single by redshirt freshman
Zak Tupper. ESU scored four runs in the fifth, with Serfass hitting a two-run homer and Guarino belting a two-run double.
ESU will host Bloomfield, weather-permitting, in a single nine-inning game on Monday at 3 p.m. Kutztown is scheduled to travel to Mitterling Field for the Warriors' first PSAC East action of the season on Tuesday. The Golden Bears, picked to win the division, went 1-3 against Shippensburg in their first conference series this weekend.
