KUTZTOWN – Junior Jason Kelmer's two-out grand slam gave East Stroudsburg University a 4-3 lead in the top of the seventh of the nightcap, but Kutztown tied the game on a double by Shayne Houck and won it on a home run by James Quigley in the bottom of the inning to take both ends of a PSAC East baseball doubleheader on Wednesday.
Kutztown (14-5, 3-3 PSAC East) won the opener 9-3 and Ryan Cassidy (5.0 IP, three hits) and Jordan Garcia (1.0 IP) held the Warriors in check in the second game before ESU loaded the bases on singles by sophomore 2B
Ryan Guarino, sophomore SS
Evan Gallagher and redshirt sophomore 3B
Jake Griesemer. Kelmer followed with a blast to left for his third homer of the year before the Golden Bears rallied to win it, 6-4.
Freshman
Brian Ernst started for the Warriors (9-7, 0-2) and shut down Kutztown for the first five innings, yielding just two hits and an unearned run in the first and throwing four hitless frames before Houck homered and Matt Kulbacki had an RBI double in the sixth.
Sophomore
Chad Jacobson entered, stranded Kulbacki to end the sixth and got a pair of groundouts to third to start the seventh before Mike Kacelowicz walked, Houck doubled and Quigley hit the game-winning home run.
In the first game, Kutztown had 13 hits and scored three runs in the first, two in the third and four unearned runs in the sixth after the Warriors pulled within 5-3 in the top of the inning.
Jared Frey hit a three-run double for the Golden Bears in the first and had another RBI double and scored in the third, and was one of five Kutztown players with at least two hits. Kacelowicz was 3-for-4 and hit a solo homer in the sixth.
Griesemer had a two-run single for the Warriors in the fifth to score senior C
Brendan O'Connor and Guarino, who both walked to start the inning. In the sixth, freshman RF
Evan Cain singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on a single by Guarino.
Jonathan Grosse earned the win on the mound for Kutztown, throwing 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits, and Jordan Garcia came on to get the last out of the sixth and gave up one hit in the seventh to get credit for the save. Senior
Christian Saveri took the loss for ESU, going 5.2 innings, with freshman
Colin Kelly picking up the last out of the Kutztown sixth.
Gallagher and Griesemer were both 2-for-4 at the top of the order in the second game and had hits in the first game. Gallagher extended his hitting streak to five games and had a streak of seven games earlier this season.
Ernst collected a hit in both games and has an active six-game stretch. He is hitting .306 on the season and has a 3.13 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 23.0 innings to start his collegiate career.
The Warriors face No. 6 West Chester (19-3, 6-0) this weekend, with the first half of the four-game set scheduled for Friday at West Chester before ESU hosts a pair of games on Saturday in its first action of the year at Mitterling Field.
