EASTON – Senior Paul Wagner (hammer throw) and junior Lynn Mayer (high jump) reached NCAA Division II provisional qualifying marks in their events and East Stroudsburg University won the men's championship at the Lafayette 7-Way Meet on Saturday at the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex.

Wagner, an All-American in the hammer throw last year, had a mark of 190-0 to make the national performance list for this year's NCAA Division II outdoor championships at UNC-Charlotte. He also placed second in the shot put (47-7 1/4) and third in the discus (147-1).

The Warriors scored 169 points and won by a 27-point margin over Rider, which finished with 142. ESU was the only Division II team in the field, with Division I schools Rider, Lafayette (98 points), St. Joseph's (87) and Lehigh (50) placing second through fifth. Division III institutions Muhlenberg (11) and Moravian (2) were sixth and seventh.

Mayer cleared 5-8 in the high jump and is a three-time All-American in the event for the Warriors, including this indoor season when she tied for second in the country at 5-8 1/2. The outdoor automatic qualifying standard is 5-8 3/4.

The women's team was fourth with 106 points behind St. Joseph's (152.5), Lafayette (116) and Rider (115), followed by Muhlenberg (41.5), Lehigh (39) and Moravian (17).

ESU's men won six individual events along with the 4x100m relay, while the women had two individual first-place finishes with Mayer in the high jump and sophomore Adrienne Dieter in the 400m hurdles.

On the track, senior Chris Reddick won the 200m in 22.09 seconds and sophomore Ian Melhorn was second in 22.09. Junior Asher Ashfield (10.87) and Melhorn (11.24) were second and third in the 100m and junior Greg Pammer finished second in the 400m (49.76). Freshman Mike Saparito was third in the 800m (1:56.24). Freshman Corey Young took the 110m hurdles in 15.06 seconds.

Ashfield, Melhorn, Reddick and senior Andrew McCloskey turned in a time of 41.92 to win the 4x100m relay by almost a full second over Rider. Melhorn, Saparito, Reddick and sophomore Sam Janssen were second in the 4x400m relay in 3:23.89, 37-hundredths of a second behind Lafayette.

Senior Drew Miller, already an NCAA provisional qualifier in the triple jump with a mark of 50-0 1/2 at the Lynchburg Invitational last weekend, won the event at 48-10 and was second in the long jump at 22-1 1/2.

Seniors Matthew Gallup (14-9) and Shane Burrows (13-3 1/2) were first and second in the pole vault. Freshman Kyle Soden (6-4 3/4), sophomore Dan Johnson (6-2 3/4) and Burrows (6-2 3/4) went 1-2-3 in the high jump.

Mayer and Dieter paced the ESU women in the meet, with several athletes also turning in strong performances on the second weekend of the outdoor season.

Senior Trina Carito had a pair of second-place finishes in the high jump (5-3) and triple jump (36-11) coming off a trip to the NCAA Division II indoor championships in the pentathlon two weeks ago. Senior Emily Hollick gave the Warriors the top three finishers in the high jump, finishing behind Mayer and Carito at 5-1.

Freshman Lauren Ventrella, who was named the PSAC Women's Indoor Freshman of the Year last week, was second in the 100m hurdles in 15.27. Ventrella won the 60m hurdles and was third in the 60m dash at the conference's indoor championships.

In the field events, senior Amanda Sines placed second in the shot put (39-2 1/2) and third in the hammer (149-2). Senior Emily Carothers was third in the shot and fifth in the hammer, and junior Jackie Berthelsen placed fourth in the shot put. Freshman Paige Fleagle was third in the javelin.

The Warriors will compete at Millersville next Saturday. Mayer, Miller and Wagner all have NCAA provisional marks through the first two weeks of the outdoor season and were among seven ESU athletes who competed at the NCAA Division II indoor championships earlier this month.
