EAST STROUDSBURG – Senior left-hander
Christian Saveri stranded 13 Shippensburg runners on base in a 3-1 victory in the opener to help East Stroudsburg University split a doubleheader on Saturday at Mitterling Field and take three of four games in this weekend's PSAC East baseball series.
Shippensburg (12-27, 6-10) used an 11-run fifth inning to win the second game, 18-5, after the Warriors posted 5-4 and 10-4 wins on Friday. Both schools have eight games remaining in their PSAC East schedule, with ESU (14-16, 5-11) facing Millersville and Mansfield the next two weekends.
Saveri followed his five-out save in ESU's win in the opener on Friday with an impressive complete game performance. The Raiders had at least one hit in every inning and multiple base runners in every frame but the third, but were just 1-for-15 with runners in scoring position and didn't score until there were two outs in the seventh.
The Warriors used a pair of two-out doubles to support Saveri offensively. In the second, freshman C
Nico Delerme singled, freshman DH
Tom Spilatore doubled and sophomore CF
Carey Zimmerman drove a double just inside the third-base line to put ESU on the board.
Junior 3B Jason Kelmer gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead with his RBI double in the fifth, as freshman LF
Evan Cain hit a one-out double and scored on Kelmer's double down the right field line.
Saveri pitched out of trouble in every inning. He faced 35 batters, including six in the fifth inning, when he pitched around a single, wild pitch, walk and an error to leave the bases loaded and got the lead runner at third on a sacrifice bunt attempt with one out.
Shippensburg threatened again in the seventh, as Cody Kulp (3-for-4, two doubles) led off the inning with a double and Kris Kullman reached on catcher's intereference. Jesse Smith singled up the middle to score Kulp after a pair of fly outs before Saveri got Kevin Scholly to pop up to second to end the game.
Saveri has a 2.36 ERA in 49.2 innings this season and is two appearances away from tying ESU's career record of 64 games pitched. He was a second team All-PSAC East reliever last season, with a 3.24 ERA in a school-record 22 appearances.
Shippensburg broke open the second game with three runs in the second and three more in the fourth before putting together its 11-run fifth with the benefit of eight hits, four walks and three ESU throwing errors.
Billy Miller was 1-for-1 with three walks, three RBI and scored four runs and A.J. Czap was 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs in the first two spots in the order, and Scholly went 3-for-5 out of the No. 8 spot. The Raiders had 26 hits in the doubleheader, 10 in the first game and 16 in the second.
Left-hander Ted Williams scattered 10 hits in a complete game on the mound, allowing five runs (four earned) and striking out five. ESU sent five pitchers to the mound, with sophomore
Ryan Beck giving up seven runs (five earned) in 3.1 innings as the starter.
Sophomore SS
Evan Gallagher was 3-for-4 with two RBI in the game and 5-for-7 in the doubleheader, and freshman OF
Eric Boyer was 2-for-3.
The baseball program held its Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Day and Alumni Day events during Saturday's doubleheader and Crystal Martinez, a 15-year old student from the Pocono Mountain School District, had a spectacular rendition of the national anthem.
The Warriors had seven doubles, giving them 51 on the season, as they continue their “Dollars for Doubles” campaign to raise funds for the Allentown chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Those who wish to offer their
support can visit this link to pledge a flat amount or an amount per double for the Warriors this season.
ESU will play a pair of midweek non-conference doubleheaders, hosting Washington Adventist on Wednesday and traveling to Lincoln on Thursday, before taking on Millersville in PSAC East play next weekend.
