ESU Track & Field Claims Five Individual Winners at Lehigh Games

BETHLEHEM – Five athletes won events and junior Bill Buis (javelin) became East Stroudsburg University's eighth qualifier for the NCAA Division II Championships on Saturday at the Lehigh Games.

Buis had a throw of 198-4 to finish third in the javelin and provisionally qualified for his second straight trip to the NCAA outdoor championships. Sophomore Josh Hontz just missed the provisional mark of 193-7, finishing fourth at 192-8. Barry Krammes, a 2004 ESU graduate and two-time All-American, won the event with a throw of 236-11.

Junior Lynn Mayer, coming off an NCAA automatic performance at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia on Thursday, won the women's high jump with a mark of 5-8. Mayer cleared 5-9 3/4 to finish second in the women's Eastern high jump at Penn and is a three-time All-American.

Junior Janelle Smith had a provisional mark of 5-7 at Penn and finished second at Lehigh at 5-4 1/4. Sophomore Devyn Emerich, a provisional qualifier last spring, also cleared 5-4 1/4 to finish fourth and set her season best.

Mayer and senior Paul Wagner (hammer throw) are automatic qualifiers for the NCAA championship field. Smith, Buis and seniors Trina Carito (heptathlon), Matthew Gallup (pole vault), Drew Miller (triple jump) and Chris Reddick (400m) have all reached the provisional standard.

Senior Niki Pasquarella (5000m), freshman Corinne Fitzgerald (3000m steeplechase), junior Jackie Berthelsen (shot put) and senior Shane Burrows (high jump) all won their events for the Warriors at Lehigh.

Pasquarella finished the 5000 in 18:37.50, Fitzgerald won the steeplechase in 11:27.84 and freshman Rose Mascoli had season best times in the 800 (7th, 2:23.23) and 1500 (2nd, 4:48.21) to lead the women's performances on the track.

In the women's throws, junior Jackie Berthelsen won the shot put with a season best of 38-4 and junior Danielle Laws was second in the discus (128-3) and hammer throw (152-5) and third in the shot put (37-3). She had her best mark of the season in the discus and just missed her top mark of 153-1 in the hammer throw, set last week at ESU's All-American Meet.

On the men's side, Burrows won the high jump at 6-6, freshman Corey Young was second in both the 110m hurdles (15.12) and 400m hurdles (56.11) and freshman Kyle Soden tied for second in the high jump and was third in the 110 hurdles.

The Warriors' top men's sprinters all competed at the Penn Relays, with the distance runners also turning in strong performances at Lehigh. Sophomores Greg Laraia (15:24.41) and Tom Zarnoch (15:25.60) were third and fourth in the 5000m, with Laraia recording ESU's top time in the event this season.

Freshman Amr Aldeen ran a time of 4:01.84 to finish third in the 1500m and won the second of five heats in the 800 (1:59.56), placing 20th overall. Sophomore Mahmoud Aldeen won the first heat (1:58.23) with freshman Ben Sweet finishing second (1:58.94). Aldeen and Sweet were 15th and 16th overall.

The Warriors will compete at the Ellison Invitational at Lock Haven and the Kutztown Invitational the next two weekends before traveling to West Chester for the PSAC Outdoor Championships on May 13-15.
