MILLERSVILLE – Senior Chris Reddick ran an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time of 47.90 seconds in the 400 meters and senior Paul Wagner improved his national qualifying mark in the hammer throw at 193-7 as East Stroudsburg University competed at the Millersville Spring Opener on Saturday.

Reddick was second in the 400 and just under the provisional standard of 48.0 seconds, and junior Negus Graham finished third in 48.09 seconds. Graham was an All-American in the 400 during the indoor season, while Reddick had the second-fastest qualifying time in Division II in the 200 meters and was also a provisional qualifier in the 400.

Reddick is the fourth ESU athlete to reach a provisional standard through three meets this spring, along with Wagner, senior Drew Miller (triple jump) and junior Lynn Mayer (high jump).

Wagner's throw of 193-7 won the hammer and was just shy of his school and PSAC record of 196-9. He had a mark of 190-0 at Lafayette last week. Wagner was second in the discus (148-7) and sixth in the shot put (46-3 3/4) at Millersville.

The Warriors won eight events – Wagner, senior Andrew McCloskey (100m), freshman Frank Fezza (800m), freshman Corey Young (110m hurdles) and Miller (triple jump) on the men's side and junior Jasmine Johnson (200m), freshman Lauren Ventrella (100m hurdles) and Mayer (high jump) for the women.

ESU's men's sprinters all had great days, led by Reddick, Graham and McCloskey, the defending PSAC champion in the 100m dash who turned in a time of 10.80 seconds on Saturday. Junior Asher Ashfield (10.91) was third and sophomore Ian Melhorn (10.98) was fourth.

The 4x100m relay team of Ashfield, Melhorn, Reddick and McCloskey won the event in 41.56 seconds and is looking for the provisional mark of 41.35 and a return trip to the NCAA outdoor championships. The 4x400m squad (Melhorn, Graham, junior Greg Pammer and Reddick) was second in 3:17.03, finishing behind PSAC foe Lock Haven.

Fezza had a season-best time of 1:54.02 to win the 800 and Young won the 110 hurdles in 15.07.

In the women's track events, Johnson ran the 200 for the first time this year and won in 25.79 seconds. Ventrella took the 110 hurdles in 15.28, with junior Brittany Knowles (15.70) finishing third and senior Trina Carito (15.83) in fourth. Freshman Tara Getz was third in the 400 in 1:00.96.

Ventrella ran on both of the relay teams which placed second. She anchored the 4x100 team with fellow freshmen Lauren Hannan and Kimberly Lawson and sophomore Adrienne Dieter to a time of 50.67, and ran the first leg of the 4x400 which had a season-best of 3:59.03, along with Carito, Getz and Johnson.

Freshmen Rose Mascoli and Corinne Fitzgerald had strong days in the middle distance and distance events. Mascoli placed sixth in the 1500 (4:51.31) and seventh in the 800 (2:25.80), and Fitzgerald was second in the 3000m steeplechase (11:38.25).

The Warriors' men had a top-three finisher in seven of the eight field events. Miller won the triple jump at 47-5 and was second in the long jump (22-2 1/2), Wagner won the hammer and was second in the discus, freshman Kyle Soden was second in the high jump (6-5 1/2), sophomore Joshua Hontz was second in the javelin (187-1) and senior Matthew Gallup placed third in the pole vault (15-1).

Mayer had the second-best mark in the women's high jump in Division II last week at Lafayette, clearing 5-8, and won for the third time in three outdoor meets this season at 5-5 3/4. Senior Janelle Smith was second (5-3 3/4) and Carito finished third (5-1 3/4).

Senior Emily Carothers had the best day among ESU's women's throwers, finishing third in the hammer (137-5) and fourth in the shot put (37-8). Junior Danielle Laws was fourth in the discus (115-10) and fifth in the hammer (136-2). Freshman Paige Fleagle placed fourth in the javelin (115-11).

The Warriors are a third of the way through the nine weekends of the outdoor season and will travel to Bucknell for the Bison Classic and West Chester for the WCU Invitational next weekend.
