WEST CHESTER – Senior Paul Wagner won the shot put and hammer throw and junior Lynn Mayer defended her indoor title in the high jump to lead East Stroudsburg University on the second day of the 2010 PSAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at Farrell Stadium.

The Warriors' women are second behind Slippery Rock going into the final day, trailing the Rock by five points, 54 to 49. Shippensburg is a strong third with 46.5 points with the remainder of the field events and all of the track finals except for the 5,000 and 10,000 meters on the docket for Saturday.

ESU's men are also in great position for a solid finish and have finished second at both the 2009 outdoor and 2010 indoor championships. They currently sit in third with 39 points, behind Shippensburg (58) and Lock Haven (57).

The Warriors have contenders in all five of the remaining field events (pole vault, triple jump, javelin, high jump and discus), and seniors Matthew Gallup (pole vault) and Drew Miller (triple jump) are both four-time conference champions. On the track, ESU advanced nearly all of its top sprinters to the finals, including five of the eight finalists in the 200m dash.

Wagner has eight career PSAC titles, the most in school history, after marks of 197-0 in the hammer and 51-9 1/4 in the shot put. He has won the last three hammer titles and posted three straight titles in the weight indoors, along with this year's indoor shot put. His mark in the hammer breaks his own PSAC meet record of 190-3 and is just off his overall PSAC record and NCAA automatic mark of 203-2 from earlier this year.

Wagner passed Lenny Jenkins and Sue Carden, both seven-time PSAC champions, and will compete in the finals of the discus on Saturday. Jenkins (1973-75) and Carden (1979-82) both competed at ESU long before the indoor championships were introduced in 2002.

The Warriors also picked up 13 points in the decathlon and six in the long jump in Friday's finals. Sophomore Dan Johnson (second, 6,377 points) and senior Colin Feeney (fourth, 5,916 points) both moved up two spots after ranking fourth and sixth, respectively, through the first five events held on Thursday. Miller was third in the long jump at 23-3 1/4 and is the favorite in the triple jump on Saturday, entering with an NCAA automatic mark of 50-8 3/4.

Johnson reached the NCAA provisional standard of 6,300 points and had personal bests in the pole vault and 1500, along with the top mark in the discus (105-8) and the second-best in the javelin (173-10). Feeney had a mark of 13-11 1/4 in the pole vault, the second-best in the field, to bolster his personal record.

On the track, junior Negus Graham shattered the school record and had an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 46.64 in the 400m. He has the second-fastest time entering Saturday's final, while senior Chris Reddick qualified fifth in 47.90. Graham was an indoor All-American in the 400, a school record 47.37, and has the fifth-best time in the nation through Friday; Manuel Ferreira set the previous school record of 47.73 in 1990.

Graham and Reddick lead a contingent of five Warriors who qualified for the 200m final, locking up the third through seventh spots. Graham ran 21.55, followed by Reddick (21.70), senior Andrew McCloskey (21.79), sophomore Ian Melhorn (21.91) and junior Asher Ashfield (21.98).

McCloskey won his heat in the 100m (10.82) and is the defending PSAC champion in the 100 and 200. He also anchored the 4x100m relay to a time of 40.93, reaching the NCAA provisional standard and ranking eighth in the national list. Ashfield led off, followed by Melhorn, Reddick and McCloskey. ESU is the defending PSAC champion in the event, running 40.83 in last year's finals (Ashfield, Reddick and McCloskey all returned).

The Warriors' final two qualifiers in track events are senior Rusty Smith, the defending champion in the 110m hurdles (second, 15.10) and freshman Mike Saparito, who picked up the final spot in a very fast field in the 800m (1:54.60).

ESU's women were paced by four high jumpers who combined for 25 points. Mayer won with a mark of 5-7 3/4, senior Janelle Smith was second (also at 5-7 3/4), sophomore Devyn Emerich was fourth (5-3 3/4) and senior Trina Carito tied for sixth (5-3 3/4).

Mayer, a three-time All-American, won her first career PSAC title indoors at 5-7, was the NCAA runner-up at 5-8 1/2 and is tied for the second-best mark in the nation outdoors at 5-9 3/4. Smith, a three-time NCAA participant, improved her provisional mark and is tied for eighth in Division II.

Carito's performance in the high jump came 10 minutes after she completed a runner-up and personal best effort in the heptathlon with 4,784 points, improving her NCAA provisional performance. IUP's Maddy Outman set the PSAC record with 5,062 points and also set conference records in the 100m hurdles and 400m on Friday.

Carito posted season bests in the high jump (5-5 1/4), 200m (26.99), javelin (106-11) and 800m (2:19.15), and had her best-ever marks in the heptathlon in the 200, 800, javelin and long jump (17-11 3/4). Her time in the 800, the final event, netted her 835 points and moved her past West Chester's Melinda Wentz into second place.

She has scored in 20 events - 15 individual and five relays - in her career at ESU, including championships in the heptathlon (outdoor 2008), pentathlon (indoor 2010) and triple jump (indoor 2008), and still has the triple jump and 4x400m relay on Saturday, along with a potential medical redshirt for the 2011 indoor season.

ESU had the third, fifth and seventh finishers in the hammer throw, where junior Danielle Laws (161-5) was followed by senior Amanda Sines (154-6) and senior Emily Carothers (147-5). Sines also scored in the shot put, placing eighth (40-2 1/4).

Freshman Rose Mascoli opened the finals for the Warriors on Thursday night, placing sixth in the 10,000m run in a time of 37:38.02.

In the women's prelims on the track, junior Jasmine Johnson had the third-fastest times in both the 200m (25.51) and 400m (56.48), freshman Lauren Ventrella was fourth in the 100m hurdles (14.97) and senior Emily Hollick was seventh in the 400m hurdles (1:04.33).

ESU was fourth in the prelims of the 4x100m relay in a season-best time of 48.40, with a quartet of freshman Lauren Hannan, Johnson, sophomore Adrienne Dieter and Ventrella.

Saturday's action begins with the first field events at 11 a.m., followed by the finals on the track beginning at 12:30 p.m.
