WEST CHESTER – Senior Paul Wagner was named the Men's Field and Overall Athlete of the Meet and junior Negus Graham took Men's Track Athlete of the Meet honors as East Stroudsburg University finished as the men's runner-up for the third straight time on Saturday at the PSAC Championships at Farrell Stadium.
Shippensburg edged ESU, 163.5-159.5, after entering the final two events (3000m steeplechase, 4x400m relay) tied at 147.5. The Raiders won last year's outdoor championship by 6.5 points (143.5-137), while Lock Haven won the indoor title 135-134.5. The Warriors finished second for the fifth time outdoors (1976, 1978-79, 2009-10) and broke last year's school record of 137 points.
ESU made up nearly all of the 19-point gap on Shippensburg on Saturday after trailing 58-39 entering the day. Ship finished second and fourth in the steeplechase while ESU had the seventh-place finisher to take an insurmountable 11-point lead into the 4x400m relay, which the Warriors won in 3:14.29 to tie the school record set last week at Lock Haven.
The Warriors' women were fourth with 97 points, finishing behind Shippensburg (212.5), Slippery Rock (183) and Kutztown (99.5). They were fifth at last year's outdoor championships and third indoors this year. ESU's point total is its highest since 1982.
The Warriors claimed the overall Men's Athlete of the Meet for the third straight championship, with Wagner joining Andrew McCloskey (2009 outdoor) and Chris Reddick (2010 indoor) as meet MVP's. Their five individual titles tied a school record (1978, 2009), and the 4x100 and 4x400 relay squads won PSAC championships in the same year for the first time in school history.
Wagner was recognized after winning the hammer throw (197-0) and shot put (51-9 1/4) on Friday and placing fourth in the discus on Saturday, accounting for 25 points. His throw in the hammer broke his own PSAC meet record. Wagner finishes his PSAC championship career as an eight-time champion, the most in school history, and a four-time champion as a senior (weight, shot indoors; hammer, shot outdoors). He was previously named the Men's co-Field Athlete of the Meet both indoors and outdoors as a sophomore.
Graham was the Men's Track Athlete of the Meet for his performance in the 200m, 400m and 4x400m relay. He won the 400 in 47.43, one day after running an NCAA automatic qualifying time and school record of 46.64 in the prelims on Friday. He placed sixth in the 200 (21.99) and ran the first leg of the 4x400 which tied the school record with a provisional time of 3:14.29.
Wagner, Graham, senior Drew Miller (triple jump) and junior Lynn Mayer (high jump) are all automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, which will be held at UNC Charlotte on May 27-29. A number of Warriors are also provisional qualifiers and may be selected when the championship announcement is made next week.
Friday's efforts were led by Wagner's two titles and 13 points in the decathlon, while Saturday's strength came on the track, along with Miller's successful defense of his triple jump championship. The senior won his fifth career PSAC title with a mark of 49-5 1/2.
McCloskey won the 100m dash with a time of 10.85 seconds, defending his PSAC title in the event. He was also the defending champ in the 200 and finished second (21.50) to lead a group of five Warriors who made the finals, along with sophomore Ian Melhorn (5th), Graham (6th), Reddick (7th) and junior Asher Ashfield (8th).
In the 400, Graham posted a time of 47.43 to beat Lock Haven's Chris Edelman (47.62) for the conference title after both athletes ran NCAA automatic qualifying times in the prelims. Reddick was fifth in 48.21.
The 4x100m relay of Ashfield, Reddick, Melhorn and McCloskey defended its PSAC title and broke the school record in 40.79 seconds. The Warriors ran 40.83 to win last year's title and should be in line for a spot in the NCAA championship field. Reddick anchored the 4x400m relay, along with Graham, Melhorn and junior Greg Pammer, to their first title in the event since 1987.
Freshman Mike Saparito earned a fifth-place finish in the 800m (1:54.98) after qualifying for the last spot in the prelims. Freshman Amr Aldeen was sixth in the 1500m in 3:57.56 and junior Chris Zadroga placed seventh in the 3000m steeplechase in 9:30.63.
Senior Rusty Smith, the defending champion in the 110m hurdles, placed second after missing most of the outdoor season due to injury. He ran a time of 14.79 seconds, finishing behind California's Brice Myers (14.36), coming off a time of 15.10 in the prelims.
ESU scored at least five points in all five of the field events contested on Saturday, including Miller's title in the triple jump, Wagner's fourth-place finish in the discus (152-3), and senior Matthew Gallup's third-place showing in the pole vault (14-10 1/4). Junior Bill Buis was fourth in the javelin with a mark of 185-3.
Three Warriors placed in the high jump, led by a career-best effort from senior Shane Burrows, who was third at 6-6 3/4. Freshman Kyle Soden tied for fourth at 6-4 3/4 and sophomore Dan Johnson, the runner-up in the decathlon, finished sixth at 6-2 3/4.
ESU's women were paced by junior Jasmine Johnson, who was second in the 200m (25.17) and third in the 400m (56.67). Johnson was second in both sprints during the indoor season and has six top-three finishes in her career to date.
Freshman Lauren Ventrella set the school record in the 100m hurdles, finishing fourth in 14.73 seconds. She broke the record of 14.77 set by Jayme Ferraro in 2006 and also owns ESU's indoor records in the 60m hurdles (8.94) and 60m dash (7.79) in her first year on campus.
Senior Emily Hollick was seventh in the 400m hurdles for the second straight year, running a personal best of 1:03.73.
Johnson and Ventrella ran on both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays which placed third and fifth, respectively, In the 4x100, freshman Lauren Hannan, Johnson, sophomore Adrienne Dieter and Ventrella clocked a time of 48.72; the 4x400 squad of Ventrella, Johnson, freshman Tara Getz and senior Trina Carito ran 3:56.35. Carito placed second in the heptathlon on Thursday and Friday.
Freshman Corinne Fitzgerald established another school record, breaking the 3000m steeplechase record in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 11:17.83. She finished fourth in the event and senior Niki Pasquarella was sixth in 11:34.43 to score for the third straight year. Kelly Curry held the previous record in the steeplechase (11:20.03, 2005).
Freshman Rose Mascoli followed her sixth-place effort in the 10,000m run on Thursday with a seventh-place showing in the 1500m run, crossing the line in 4:46.43. Mascoli finished just out of the top eight in the 3000m, placing 11th in 10:34.86.
Junior Danielle Laws was third in the discus (127-11) one day after placing third in the hammer throw. Senior Amanda Sines was eighth in the discus and placed fifth in the hammer and eighth in the shot put.
