LOCK HAVEN – Senior Drew Miller automatically qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in the triple jump and hit the provisional qualifying standard in the long jump to lead a number of outstanding performances by East Stroudsburg University athletes at Lock Haven's Elliston Invitational on Saturday.
Miller's mark of 50-8 3/4 is tied for the fifth-best in the nation this year and will send him to UNC Charlotte on May 27-29 for his fourth career appearance at the NCAA championships. He was previously on the provisional list at 50-0 1/2 at the season-opening Lynchburg Invitational; the automatic standard is 50-2 1/2.
He finished second in the long jump at 23-11 3/4, a season best by more than 10 inches, to surpass the provisional qualifier of 23-5 1/2. He is tied for 11th in the long jump on the national list.
Sophomore Josh Hontz became ESU's second provisional qualifier in the men's javelin in as many weeks, hitting a career-best throw of 201-1 to easily pass the provisional mark of 193-7. Junior Bill Buis threw 198-4 last week at Lehigh. Hontz is 11th and Buis is 14th on the national performance list.
The Warriors have three automatic and seven provisional qualifying performances for the NCAA championships to date. Miller, senior Paul Wagner (hammer throw) and junior Lynn Mayer (high jump) have qualified automatically, while Hontz, Buis, Miller (long jump), senior Matthew Gallup (pole vault), senior Chris Reddick (400m), senior Janelle Smith (high jump) and senior Trina Carito (heptathlon) are provisional qualifiers.
ESU carded 11 first-place finishers at Lock Haven, including Miller in the triple jump, Gallup in the pole vault (16-0 3/4) and Mayer in the high jump (5-7 1/4).
The men's team won five events on the track and featured a season-best time of 41.41 seconds in the 4x100m relay. The Warriors' quartet of junior Asher Ashfield, sophomore Ian Melhorn and seniors Reddick and Andrew McCloskey ran 41.43 twice already this year, at Lynchburg and the Penn Relays, and are aiming for the provisional time of 41.35 seconds.
McCloskey won the 100m dash in 10.71 seconds and Graham took the 200m in 21.88. Freshman Mike Saparito won the 800m (1:55.49) and senior Rusty Smith, a two-time indoor All-American, returned from injury that has limited his performance since the indoor season and won the 110m hurdles in 15.05. Freshmen Corey Young and Kyle Soden were second and third.
Other efforts on the track included three of the top five finishers in the 1500m, as freshman Frank Fezza was second (4:02.06), freshman Amr Aldeen was third and senior Kyle Weir placed fourth. Junior Chris Zadroga was second in the 3000m (8:58.81).
Soden won the high jump at 6-4 3/4 with senior Shane Burrows finishing second. Wagner was third in both the hammer (174-8) and shot put (46-0 3/4) and fourth in the discus (148-10), while Hontz and Buis were second and third in the javelin.
On the women's side, Mayer posted her seventh win of the season in the high jump and ESU swept the top three places as Smith and Carito tied for second at 5-4 1/2. Carito was also fourth in the long jump with a mark of 18-7, a season best by nearly a foot, and finished seventh in the triple jump at 36-8 1/2.
Senior Amanda Sines won the shot put (40-9 3/4), surpassing her previous best mark by almost a foot and a half, and junior Danielle Laws won the discus (127-3). Sines was third in the hammer and fifth in the discus, Laws placed sixth in the hammer and 11th in the shot put, and junior Jackie Berthelsen placed third in the discus and fifth in the shot put in her two events.
The Warriors' women also had several strong performances on the track, led by freshman Rose Mascoli (10:41.58) and senior Niki Pasquarella (11:01.74), who were second and third in the 3000m. Freshman Corinne Fitzgerald placed fourth in the 1500m in 4:55.41, her top time of the year by eight seconds.
Freshman Lauren Ventrella was third in the 100m hurdles (14.99) and anchored the second-place 4x100m relay team of freshmen Lauren Hannan and Tara Getz and sophomore Adrienne Dieter to a time of 49.70. Freshman Aniyah Williams was fourth in the 200m in 27.40.
The Warriors will compete in the Kutztown Invitational this weekend, their final tune-up before the PSAC Championships at West Chester on May 13-15. The NCAA Championships will be held two weeks later at UNC Charlotte.
