EAST STROUDSBURG – The men's 4x400m relay set the school record at Lock Haven, while the women's 4x100m squad edged the host Golden Bears by one-one-hundredth of a second at Kutztown as East Stroudsburg University began its final preparations for the PSAC outdoor championships on Saturday.
Sophomore Ian Melhorn, senior Chris Reddick and juniors Greg Pammer and Negus Graham turned in a time of 3:14.29, breaking the two-week old record of 3:15.39 set by the same group (Reddick, Pammer, Graham, Melhorn) to win the Wetzler/PA 4x400 at the Penn Relays. The Warriors clocked an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying time and finished second to Lock Haven.
Junior Asher Ashfield finished second to Lock Haven's Greg Mock in a near-dead heat against a strong headwind in the 100m dash final (11.101 to 11.107). Ashfield ran 11.78 to place third in the prelims, while senior Andrew McCloskey (11.43) was second but did not run in the finals.
At Kutztown, ESU athletes won eight events, along with the women's 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
The 4x100 quartet of freshman Tara Getz, junior Jasmine Johnson, sophomore Adrienne Dieter and freshman Lauren Ventrella ran a time of 50.16 seconds, clipping Kutztown's relay at the tape. The 4x400m squad of senior Emily Hollick, Johnson, Ventrella and senior Trina Carito posted a 10-second margin of victory in 4:00.47.
Ventrella was second in the 100m dash in 12.89, qualifying for next weekend's PSAC Championships in the only time she competed at the distance this season. Ventrella won the PSAC indoor title in the 60m hurdles and was third in the 60m dash, and has the fourth-fastest time in the conference in the 100m hurdles (14.93) this spring.
Junior Lynn Mayer easily won the high jump at 5-8 3/4 and has the PSAC's top mark this season by nearly three inches over teammate Janelle Smith. Mayer cleared 5-9 3/4 at the Penn Relays, an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark which is tied for the second-best in the nation this year, and is the defending PSAC champion and national runner-up during the indoor season.
The Warriors had three other individual winners on the women's side, Getz in the 400 (1:02.36), Carito in the 100m hurdles (season-best 15.53) and freshman Paige Fleagle in the javelin (106-10). Carito is an NCAA provisional qualifier in the heptathlon and won the PSAC title as a sophomore in 2008.
Freshmen Rose Mascoli (2:22.50) and Corinne Fitzgerald (2:25.24) both ran season-best times in the 800 and finished second and third, respectively. Hollick was second in the 400m hurdles in 1:07.30, and sophomore Devyn Emerich was second to Mayer in the high jump at 5-3.
The Warriors' men also won four events – freshman Amr Aldeen (800m – 1:59.54), freshman Corey Young (100m hurdles – season-best 15.00), sophomore Dan Johnson (high jump – 6-2 3/4) and sophomore Josh Hontz (javelin – 183-9). Hontz had a provisional qualifying mark of 201-11 last week at Lock Haven.
This weekend's meet was the final tune-up for the PSAC Championships, which will be held at West Chester next Friday and Saturday. ESU has five defending champions entering the meet – McCloskey (100, 200), Rusty Smith (110m hurdles), Paul Wagner (hammer), Matthew Gallup (pole vault) and Amanda Sines (shot put).
Three members of last year's men's 4x100m relay championship squad also return in junior Asher Ashfield, senior Chris Reddick and McCloskey on the anchor leg.
