THE MATCH-UP: East Stroudsburg University and West Chester line up for their 75th meeting on the gridiron in the PSAC East opener for both schools this afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium. The Warriors won last year's meeting, 21-20 at West Chester, to snap a six-game losing streak vs. the Golden Rams. ESU will face Bloomsburg for the 75th time next Saturday in central PA.
Both schools are looking for a positive start to the conference schedule after suffering losses vs. the PSAC West the past two weeks. Three of those games were decided by six points or less, with the other game ESU's 45-20 loss at No. 4 California on Saturday after the Warriors were within 21-20 at halftime.
THE SERIES: West Chester holds a 53-21 advantage in a series that began in 1926 with a 6-0 win by East Stroudsburg. Both schools rank in the top 20 in winning percentage in NCAA Division II history entering the 2010 season — West Chester was 3rd at .685 (531-240-17), while ESU was 18th at .608 (442-282-19). West Chester came into the year ranked 7th in Division II in wins, with ESU checking in at 27th.
Last year,
Matt Marshall threw a 5-yard TD pass to
Jordan Hallman with 6:50 left as the Warriors beat the Golden Rams for the first time since 2003. The win was highlighted by the first career appearance by true freshman TB
Kendrick Williams, who carried six times for 50 yards on the go-ahead TD drive.
DEMANDING SCHEDULE: The Warriors played the top two teams in the PSAC West preseason poll in last two weeks, and now take on PSAC East preseason favorite West Chester followed by preseason No. 2 pick Bloomsburg. ESU is playing West Chester and Bloomsburg in consecutive weeks for the 5th straight year and last beat both schools in the same season in 1991, coinciding with ESU's first trip to the NCAA Playoffs.
THE HEAD COACHES: Denny Douds (Slippery Rock '63) holds the PSAC record for career wins with a 227-148-3 record in his 37th season as head football coach at ESU. He is in his 45th season at ESU overall and is one of five active coaches in Division II, and one of just 18 coaches in all of college football, with at least 200 career victories. He has led the Warriors to nine PSAC titles and four NCAA Playoff appearances. For more information on Coach Douds and the ESU coaching staff, please see page 12 of the game notes.
Bill Zwaan (Delaware '79) has a 61-29 record in his eighth season as head coach at West Chester. He guided Widener to a six-year record of 54-14 from 1997-2002 and has a career mark of 115-43. Zwaan has led the Golden Rams to five NCAA playoff appearances and three PSAC East championships in his first seven seasons.
LAST TIME OUT: No. 4 California held a 21-20 lead at halftime, then scored 24 unanswered points in the second half to earn a 45-20 win on Saturday afternoon in southwestern PA. ESU scored 17 straight points after falling behind 14-0 early in the first quarter, and Fr. K

Marshall reached a couple of career milestones, going over 300 completions and surpassing the 4,500-yard mark for passing yards and the 5,000-yard mark for total offense. His 44 career passing TDs are one away from tying Bill Dukett (1967-69) for the 5th most in school history.
