EAST STROUDSBURG – Redshirt senior quarterback
Matt Marshall has been named the PSAC East Offensive Player of the Week for the fifth time in his career for his performance in East Stroudsburg University's season-opening 57-0 win at Pace on Saturday.
Marshall (York/Spring Grove) was 22-for-33 for 337 yards and a career-high five touchdown passes against the Setters, putting together his sixth 300-yard passing game in his 15th career start. His passing yards and 363 yards of total offense are both the third-highest of his career.
Marshall connected with eight different receivers – five wide receivers and three running backs – and threw a TD pass to five different players to lead an offense that gained 500 yards and scored the third-most points in a season opener in school history.
His five scoring tosses came in a span of 18:30, beginning with two in the final minute of the first half (eight yards to
Bryan Ogden, 26 yards to
Ed Kiser). He hit
Jeff Giglio for a nine-yard score on the first possession of the second half, then threw back-to-back TD passes to redshirt freshman tailback
Joe Klebon (68 yards) and freshman tailback
Dusty Reed (44 yards) early in the fourth quarter.
He was previously recognized twice in 2008 and 2009. As a redshirt sophomore, he threw for 258 yards and two TDs in a relief appearance at Millersville and then had 365 yards and four TDs in his second career start at Slippery Rock.
Last season, Marshall had two of the top games in school history. He had the second-most accurate day by an ESU quarterback vs. Clarion, going 23-for-29 for 316 yards and three TDs, and threw for 430 yards and two TDs in a 27-20 (OT) win at Kutztown.
He finished the 2009 season ranked sixth in ESU's record book in passing yards (2,938), touchdowns (26), pass efficiency (150.3) and total offense (3,251), behind only NCAA record-setters Jimmy Terwilliger and Damian Poalucci, while leading the Warriors to the NCAA Playoffs.
Marshall went over the 4,000-yard passing mark for his career on Saturday and has 40 TD passes, one away from tying Andy Baranek for the sixth-most in school history. He currently ranks second in career completion percentage (60.1) and pass efficiency (156.0).
