EAST STROUDSBURG – Shippensburg closed the game on a 15-3 run to steal a road win over East Stroudsburg University, 76-72, in PSAC East men's basketball on Saturday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.
The Red Raiders overcame a 69-61 deficit in the final 7:39 in a game of runs in the second half. Shippensburg ran off a 15-0 spurt to take its first lead of the game at the 14-minute mark and eventually led 56-50; ESU rattled off a 19-6 run to reestablish an eight-point lead (69-61) with just under eight minutes left; and Shippensburg closed with its run capped by four free throws by Dane Lauber in the final minute.
Lauber was 2-for-2 to give Shippensburg a 74-72 lead with 31 seconds left and went to the line again with nine seconds on the clock after ESU missed a jumper at the other end. Lauber missed both free throws but grabbed the offensive rebound, then sank a pair with six seconds remaining for the final four-point margin.
Sophomore forward
Terrance King tied his season-high with 16 points and his career-high with 13 rebounds for his third career double-double for ESU. Freshman guard
Will Brown hit four first-half three-pointers for 12 points, sophomore forward
Duane Johnson scored 11 points and senior forward
Mike Tobin had 10 points and seven rebounds.
Jordan Stasyszyn had 20 points for Shippensburg (7-11, 2-4), going 4-for-5 from the field, 3-for-3 from three-point range and 9-for-11 at the foul line. Will Royal scored 12 points and five other Red Raiders scored between seven and nine points. Shippensburg, the PSAC's top three-point percentage team, was 7-for-13 from long distance and 29-for-39 at the foul line.
The Warriors, playing for the first time since last Saturday, dropped their first home game of the season to fall to 7-1 at Koehler Fieldhouse. ESU (9-8 overall) is 2-3 in the PSAC East after a 2-0 start and hosts Millersville on Sunday after Wednesday's game was postponed due to snow.
ESU built an early 20-9 lead, keyed by seven points from King and two three's from
Will Brown, and still led by double-figures at the eight-minute mark of the first half before Shippensburg climbed back into the game. Stasyszyn's only three-pointer of the half made it 34-32, but Brown hit his third triple of the half to give ESU a cushion and the Warriors led 39-35 at halftime.
Both teams traded baskets on their first three possessions of the second half and a three-pointer by senior guard
Micah Covert gave ESU a 50-41 lead with 16:34 left before Shippensburg rallied. The Red Raiders scored eight of their 15 points from the foul line, including two free throws by Stasyszyn for their first lead of the game (51-50), and Jeren Gembe hit a three-pointer to extend the lead.
Senior guard
Mike DeMarco drilled two three-pointers to spark ESU's run in the middle of the half. He put the Warriors ahead 62-60 with just under 10 minutes left and hit another three after a steal by Johnson that pushed the margin to 67-61 two minutes later.
King hit two free throws after the eight-minute media timeout to put ESU ahead 69-61, but the Warriors didn't score from the field the rest of the way and Shippensburg hit three of its seven three-pointers down the stretch to come back. Stasyszyn brought the Red Raiders within three with 4:35 left and drilled another a minute later to make it 72-71 with 2:58 remaining.
Stasyszyn's third three of the game was the final field goal for either team. King was 1-for-2 at the line to tie the score with 1:04 left and ESU came up with a steal in the backcourt but didn't convert, and Lauber was fouled and made two free throws to give Shippensburg its final lead of the game.
