EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore forward
Terrance King scored 14 of his career-high 20 points in the first half, senior forward
Mike Tobin had seven points and seven rebounds in the second half and East Stroudsburg University ended a three-game losing streak with a 76-70 win over Millersville on Sunday afternoon at Koehler Fieldhouse.
Sophomore forward
Duane Johnson added 17 points, 10 in the second half, and scored eight points over the final seven minutes after Millersville rallied from a 19-point first half deficit to take its first lead of the game midway through the second stanza.
Tobin finished with nine points and 12 rebounds, his ninth career game with double-figure rebounds, as ESU held a 42-32 advantage on the boards. The Warriors shot 47 percent for the game – 26-for-41 inside the three-point arc – and had 15 offensive rebounds.
King followed up Saturday's 16-point, 13-rebound performance in a loss to Shippensburg with another dominating game inside, posting 20 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots to tie the late Ed Urie for eighth in school history with 78 career blocks.
King and junior forward
Eric Bryan (seven points, six rebounds) spent most of the second half in foul trouble, but the Warriors were able to respond at the defensive end by holding the Marauders (7-10, 2-4) to two field goals after they went ahead 59-58 with 8:21 remaining.
Tobin gave ESU (10-8, 3-3) the lead for good with a steal and layup with 7:00 left and Johnson scored eight of the Warriors' final 15 points, including a dunk on a lob over Millersville's zone on an assist from senior guard
Micah Covert. The highlight-reel play made the score 72-66 with 2:10 remaining, and ESU maintained at least a two possession down the stretch to seal the victory.
Covert tied his career-high with six assists and teamed with backcourt mate
Mike DeMarco (five points, four rebounds, four assists, three steals) to help the Warriors build a 33-14 lead in the game's first 11 minutes.
King was a force in the paint with 12 points, including two three-point plays, and Covert and DeMarco found open shooters as sophomore guard
Gerald Bridges, Jr. and freshman guard
Will Brown hit three-pointers and Bryan made a pair of long jumpers during one of the Warriors' best stretches of basketball of the season.
Millersville came back behind the shooting of Mike Seibert, who scored all 10 of his points in the last 7:23 of the first half and had a four-point play to get the deficit under 10 with four minutes left in the period, and eventually down to four (42-38) at intermission.
ESU stretched its lead back to nine with a 6-0 spurt early in the second half before the Marauders responded with a 10-2 stretch to get within one. A three-pointer by Jim Kelleher (15 points) forged the game's first tie at 54-54 with 10 minutes left, and another Kelleher three gave Millersville its first lead of the game at 57-56.
Tobin scored ESU's next five points, going 3-for-4 at the foul line and coming up with a steal and layup after a defensive rebound by the Marauders to put the Warriors back in front to stay. Millersville was just 6-for-10 at the foul line, 2-for-5 from the field and turned the ball over five times as ESU turned up the pressure at the defensive end and DeMarco hit a three-pointer and King had a putback to supplement Johnson's production at the offensive end down the stretch.
The Warriors, tabbed as the preseason favorite in the PSAC East after sharing last year's regular season title, won for the first time since January 15 and head to Bloomsburg on Wednesday looking to finish the first half with a 4-3 record and momentum going into the final month of the season. Tip-off at Nelson Fieldhouse is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
