THE MATCH-UP: East Stroudsburg University hits the road for the final time in 2011 with a trip to Shippensburg in the PSAC East finale for both schools. The Warriors are coming off a hard-fought 10-6 win at Cheyney, while Shippensburg had an impressive 40-0 shutout at Millersville. Both games were played in last weekend's late October snowstorm - ESU at Cheyney's natural grass field, and Shippensburg on the FieldTurf at Millersville's Biemesderfer Stadium.

CONGRATULATIONS, COACH: ESU head coach Denny Douds set the Division II record with his 394th game coached on Oct. 22, passing the total compiled by Jim Malosky of Minn.-Duluth from 1958-1997. Douds was recognized in a postgame ceremony and was introduced by offensive coordinator Mike Terwilliger, the quarterback for Douds' first four years (1974-77) and an assistant coach for the last 34.

ESU vs. SHIPPENSBURG: ESU is 3-9-1 against Shippensburg under Douds and 1-2 since Ship moved to the PSAC East in 2008. The Warriors won that year's meeting, 44-41 (OT), as Douds set the PSAC record with his 213th career win. ESU's last win at Shippensburg was a 23-21 victory in 2002; Ship won 38-14 in 2009.

THE HEAD COACHES: Denny Douds (Slippery Rock '63), in his 38th season, holds the PSAC record for career wins with a 231-161-3 record. His Division II-record 395 games are 92 more than the second-most in PSAC history. Including 68 games as an assistant coach under Charlie Reese from 1966-73, he has coached in 463 of the 763 games - 60.7 percent - in program history. Douds is 2nd among active Division II coaches and 7th among all active coaches in career victories.  He has led the Warriors to 9 PSAC titles and 4 NCAA Playoff appearances.  There have been at least four head coaches at all 15 PSAC schools during Douds' tenure. For more, please see page 15 of the game notes.

Mark Maciejewski (Shippensburg '92) is in his first season as head coach and 13th overall, replacing Rocky Rees. He was an AP All-America defensive tackle in 1991 and 1992 and played in the 1991 NCAA Playoff game won by Ship, 34-33 (OT), at Eiler-Martin Stadium. That game was Douds' 183rd on the sidelines.

THE QUARTERBACKS: This weekend's game features the only match-up in Division II football between quarterbacks who rank in the top 25 in the nation in passing.

ESU R-Sr. Ray Wagner is 4th with 315.4 yards per game and Shippensburg R-So. Zach Zulli is 21st with 260.2 ypg. Wagner led DII and was 2nd in all divisions with 381.0 yards per game through week 7 but has been limited to 172 yards passing and 205 yards of total offense due to injury the last two weeks.

Wagner (2,839 yards) and R-So. Nate Daniels (329 yards in 3 games) have helped ESU put together the No. 3-ranked passing offense in DII, averaging 352.0 yards per game. The Warriors have the only trio of wide receivers in DII averaging at least 70.0 yards per game in So. Dusty Reed (89.9), R-Jr. Jordan Hallman (86.6) and R-So. Robert Bleiler (72.0).

Zulli leads a Ship offense that is 2nd in the PSAC and 15th in DII in total offense (460.1 ypg) and 3rd in the PSAC and 18th in DII in scoring (36.3 ppg). He is 2nd to Wagner in the PSAC and 17th nationally in total offense (284.8), throwing for 2,342 yards and running for 221. Ship's offense is 4th in the PSAC in both rushing and passing.

ALL ABOUT RAY: Wagner left the Millersville game on Oct. 22 on ESU's first possession of the 2nd half after throwing a 12-yard TD pass to Reed, his 18th of the season. Wagner took a late hit two plays earlier and was forced out of the game. He returned and started last week at Cheyney, going 0-for-2 passing with three carries for 20 yards, but his injury was re-aggravated and Daniels entered in the 1st quarter.

Despite playing less than 3 quarters the last two weeks, Wagner still leads the PSAC in passing and total offense by more than 40 yards per game. He is 3rd in Division II in total offense (330.2) and 4th in passing (315.4).

Passing - 315.4, 4th DII, 1st PSAC (43.6 ahead of Peter Lalich, California)
Total Offense - 330.2, 3rd DII, 1st PSAC (45.4 ahead of Zach Zulli, Shippensburg)
Yards/Completion - 15.95, 1st DII (among QB's with 15+ completions per game)

RELIEF PITCHER: R-So. QB Nate Daniels was 5-for-18 for 66 yards and an interception in adverse conditions in the win at Cheyney. He was 7-for-10 for 182 yards, a TD and an interception after replacing Wagner vs. Millersville, throwing a 72-yard TD pass to R-Jr. WR Jordan Hallman on his first attempt and later hitting Hallman for 45 yards. He saw his first action this season in the 4th quarter vs. Pace, going 5-for-7 for 81 yards and a TD.

Wagner (172) and Daniels (182) are the 2nd set of ESU QB's to throw for 150+ yards in the same game, both against Millersville. Starter Tim Roken (150) and backup Matt Marshall (258) both did it at Millersville in 2008.

MORE DANIELS
A 2nd team All-State (AAAA) selection from Muhlenberg HS, Daniels was the only QB in Berks County history to have two 2,000-yard seasons and had 4,724 career passing yards and 43 TD. At ESU, he is a member of the school's ROTC program.

He has played in 5 games this season and attempted a pass in 3 - Pace, Millersville and Cheyney. He has been the holder on extra points and field goals since week 6 at Kutztown.

THROW OUT THE STATS
ESU went from 1st (378.8 ypg) to 3rd (352.0) in DII in passing last week, throwing for 66 yards at Cheyney.

WARRIORS GET A W
ESU's much-needed win at Cheyney ended a 7-game losing streak, its longest since losing the last two games in 1997 and the first five in 1998. It was the longest streak in the same year since dropping 7 straight to open 1986.

The Warriors' previous 7 opponents have combined for a record of 43-19. Three of the seven losses came by 4 points or less, including 22-19 vs. No. 21 California on Sept. 17 - the second game of the streak.

ESU led three games, including the Cal game, going into the 4th quarter: 19-14 vs. Cal, led No. 5 Bloomsburg 20-19 in a 32-20 loss on Oct. 1, and led Millersville 24-17 in a 31-27 loss on Oct. 22. Cal threw a 75-yard, 4th-and-10 pass to go ahead with 3:12 left, and Millersville drove 50 yards and scored the winning TD with 17 seconds left.

The Warriors are battling through the same schedule they faced last year, when they went 3-8 with five losses by 7 points or less - tied for the most in school history.

ESU QB's TOP PSAC IN TOTAL OFFENSE
Wagner leads the PSAC (and is 3rd in Division II) in total offense a category that ESU QB's have dominated over the past decade. The Warriors' QB has finished in the top 3 in the PSAC in total offense for 9 straight seasons and led the conference each season from 2002 through 2006.

EVERYBODY LOVES RAY
ESU's fifth-year senior quarterback came to ESU from Susquehanna Township HS (Harrisburg area), where he was a 3-year starter and was 2nd team All-State after leading his team to the Mid-Penn AAA championship and a 10-2 record as a senior. He threw for 1,500 yards and 18 TDs and ran for 800 yards and 14 TDs in 2006.

WAGNER FEATURED ON NCAA.COM

Against Cal, Williams was the first Warrior with 20 rushes and 5 catches since Zach Krise at Gannon in 2009 and just the fifth in 395 games under Coach Douds.

He had his 4th career 100-yard rushing game at Cheyney, set a career-high with 25 carries, scored the Warriors' only TD and ran for a 2-point conversion.

DEERY GETS START
Jr. TB Eric Deery started at tailback against Kutztown (18 carries, 54 yards, TD; 3 catches, 12 yards) and Millersville (10 carries, 43 yards), but missed last week's game due to injury.

LOOKING TO THE AIR
The Warriors are on a record pace for pass attempts this season. The offense, triggered by R-Sr. QB Ray Wagner, has thrown the ball on 60.8 percent of its plays, well above the standard of 55.4 percent held by Damian Poalucci's record-setting offense in 1996.

ESU has attempted 40.0 passes per game in 2011, including a streak of 40+ in 6 straight games from the 2nd through 7th games of the season. The Warriors attempted 41.5 passes per game in 1996.
