PHILADELPHIA – Junior
Josh Hontz continued his impressive month in the javelin, placing second in the men's collegiate final, and the men's 4x800m relay bettered last year's time to finish East Stroudsburg University's three-day trip to the Penn Relays on Saturday at Franklin Field.
Hontz hit a throw of 210-10, the second-best of his career, to top 209 feet for the fourth straight week and finish as the runner-up to Michael Simon of New Hampshire (211-7). Hontz had his career best of 212-11 at last week's All-American Meet at ESU, the seventh-best mark in Division II and just off the NCAA automatic qualifying mark.
The Warriors were the only Division II entrant in the field of the men's 4x800 relay and clocked a time of 7:46.66, 35-hundredths faster than last year's 7:46.91 and about 2.5 seconds off the school record.
Senior
Mahmoud Aldeen led off in 1:57.43, junior
Sam Janssen ran 1:55.19, sophomore
Amr Aldeen posted a split of 1:57.20 and sophomore
Mike Saparito came home in 1:56.86, more than five seconds ahead of the next finisher in the heat. ESU finished 12th in its heat and 25th of 28 schools overall.
The rest of the Warriors' performances at Penn included an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 34:39.13 from sophomore
Rose Mascoli in the 10,000m run late Thursday night, which ranks third in Division II this season and shattered her school record by 1:05. Sophomore
Corinne Fitzgerald ran her second-fastest time in the 3000m steeplechase (10:59.67), and senior
Lynn Mayer tied for ninth in the Eastern high jump at 5-6 – the result was incorrectly reported on the Penn Relays website on Thursday.
The men's relays were highlighted by a repeat title in the Wetzler/PA 4x400 Relay for the first time since 1984-85 and top-four times among Division II schools in the men's 4x100 and 4x200 relays. Senior
Negus Graham and junior
Ian Melhorn ran on all three relays on Friday.
In the women's 4x200 and 4x400 relays, senior
Jasmine Johnson turned in the Warriors' top splits, including a half-lap of 24.8 for the second-fastest time in school history in the 4x200.
The Warriors sent a large contingent of athletes to the Lehigh Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Please check Sunday or Monday for a complete recap and visit Lehigh's athletics website for official results.
