INDIANA, Pa. – Harvie Tuck ran for 146 yards and two touchdowns and IUP limited East Stroudsburg University to a second-half field goal in a 28-13 win on Saturday at Miller Stadium.
The Crimson Hawks ran for 253 yards on 51 carries in the head coaching debut of Curt Cignetti, the son of former boss Frank Cignetti. Tuck, a first team All-PSAC West tailback last season, carried 29 times, James Johnson ran 11 times for 50 yards and Teddy Blakeman had four carries for 41 yards.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Pat Smith was 10-for-14 passing for 179 yards, including 7-for-9 for 167 yards in the first half. Terrill Barnes had three catches for 149 yards and a 50-yard touchdown. IUP overcame 15 penalties for 174 yards.
ESU redshirt senior quarterback
Ray Wagner followed up his 375-yard, six-touchdown game in a 56-14 win against Pace last week with 323 yards on Saturday, but the Warriors ran for just 35 yards on 18 carries.
Wagner was 26-for-51 and threw a pair of interceptions, one in each half. He was 13-for-20 last week, all in the first half. Wagner and
Matt Marshall are the only two quarterbacks in school history to throw for more than 300 yards in their first two career starts.
Redshirt sophomore
Robert Bleiler had seven catches for 45 yards to lead 10 players who had a catch for the Warriors. Sophomore
Dusty Reed had four catches for 86 yards, junior tailback
Kendrick Williams had four catches for 55 yards and redshirt junior
Jordan Hallman caught three passes for 52 yards as four receivers had at least 50 yards for the second straight week.
Wagner was 16-for-31 for 206 yards in the first half, but the Crimson Hawks led 14-10 at intermission after both teams came up empty on drives inside the five-yard line.
ESU scored on its first possession, keyed by a third down pass to Reed for 53 yards, and Williams scored from the one-yard line on the next play to give the Warriors a quick 7-0 lead.
The Warriors' defense came up with back-to-back goal line stands on IUP's first two drives. Redshirt senior linebacker
Taylor Cave forced a fumble by Tuck at the one that was recovered by junior cornerback
Curtis Culbreath in the end zone, and on the next possession, ESU kept Tuck out of the end zone on four straight plays after a first-and-goal from the six.
IUP got on the board with the 50-yard TD pass from Smith to Barnes on the first play of its third drive, but the Warriors came back to go ahead 10-7 on their next possession. A pass interference flag and three straight completions by Wagner set up a 32-yard field goal by redshirt sophomore
John Schubert, the first of his career, with 1:10 left in the first quarter.
The Crimson Hawks responded with a 50-yard touchdown drive capped by a six-yard run by Tuck for the first of his two scores, and ESU was held out of the end zone on third- and fourth-down plays from the two-yard line after a 40-yard kick return by Williams and a 10-play, 49-yard drive.
IUP led 14-10 at halftime after ESU put itself in position to score on its final possession of the half but Schubert's 41-yard field goal missed just wide to the left.
In the second half, the Crimson Hawks ran 29 times for 175 yards and Smith was 3-for-5 for 12 yards, including a 20-yard TD pass to Matt Plautz to cap a seven-play, 55-yard drive on their first possession of the third quarter.
The Warriors pulled within 21-13 on a 25-yard field goal by Schubert on their ensuing drive, but IUP's defense stalled the offense the rest of the way. Alex Berdahi picked off Wagner and set up an eight-yard TD run by Tuck that put IUP ahead 28-13 with 2:05 left in the third quarter, and ESU punted on its final three possessions despite twice driving into IUP territory.
Sophomore outside linebacker
Derek Brown led the Warriors defense with 12 tackles, including eight solo stops, and Cave added nine tackles. Redshirt senior defensive tackle
Cody Berry had seven tackles and 2.0 TFL, senior linebacker
Mike Bergey had four tackles and 2.5 TFL and combined with redshirt senior defensive tackle
Rudy Cerami for the game's only sack.
Marvens Touissant led IUP with eight tackles. Terrell Washington had an interception while ESU was driving inside the 20-yard line in the second quarter and IUP limited ESU to a 3-for-5 day on trips inside the red zone.
GAME NOTES
* ESU head coach
Denny Douds faced his hometown team for the 13th time. Douds, a 1959 graduate of Indiana High School, is 4-9 all-time against IUP and 2-5 at Miller Stadium. His teams at Indiana HS were 26-1 over three seasons from 1956-58.
* IUP's 174 penalty yards are the second-most by an ESU opponent in 388 games under Douds. Central Connecticut State was penalized 14 times for 180 yards in the Warriors' 24-11 win in 1982. The last ESU opponent to commit at least 15 penalties was Millersville in 2007.
* Wagner was not sacked in 51 pass attempts. The Warriors gave up two sacks last week vs. Pace, both after Wagner was out of the game.
* Wagner is the 9th ESU quarterback to attempt at least 51 passes in a game. The only QB with two games with at least 51 attempts is Damian Poalucci, both in 1996. The school record of 59 attempts was set by Tim Roken vs. Shippensburg in 2008.
