THE MATCH-UP: East Stroudsburg University returns home after its longest road trip of the season to host No. 21 California in an evening affair at Eiler-Martin Stadium. ESU head coach
Denny Douds (230 wins) and Cal head coach John Luckhardt (216 wins) get together in a rare meeting of 200-win coaches in Division II for the second straight year. Cal pulled away from a 21-20 halftime lead in a 45-20 win last season.
UNDER THE LIGHTS: ESU is 5-2 in night games at Eiler-Martin Stadium since lights were installed in 2007 and won its season opener, 56-14 vs. Pace, under the lights on Sept. 1. The Warriors are 1-0 against ranked opponents in home night games, beating No. 25 Virginia Union, 14-11, in the 2008 season opener. Both losses in night games have come against IUP, 38-23 in the inaugural game in 2007 and 23-17 last fall.
THE HEAD COACHES: Douds (Slippery Rock '63), who turned 70 in February, holds the PSAC record for career wins with a 230-155-3 record in his 38th season as head football coach at ESU. His 388 games as head coach are 85 more than the second-most in PSAC history. Including 68 games as an assistant coach under Charlie Reese (1966-73), he has coached in 456 of the 756 games - 60.3 percent - in program history.
Douds is in his 46th season at ESU overall and is second among active Division II coaches and seventh among all active college football coaches in career victories. He has led the Warriors to nine PSAC titles and four NCAA Playoff appearances. For more on Coach Douds, please see page 12 of the game notes.
Luckhardt (Purdue '70) is in his 10th season as head coach at California and 27th year as a collegiate head coach, owning a record of 216-68-2 for a .759 career winning percentage. He has a 79-31 record at Cal and led the Vulcans to three straight NCAA Regional championships (2007-09) and a share of six straight PSAC West titles (2005-10). He previously guided Washington & Jefferson to 137 wins and 11 NCAA Division III Playoff appearances in 17 seasons.
NCAA LEADER: R-Sr. QB
Ray Wagner leads Division II in passing with 349.0 yards per game and is 6th in total offense (362.5 ypg) through his first two starts. He has thrown for one more yard than Mercyhurst QB Travis Rearick (698 to 697). ESU is 2nd in DII with 389.5 yards per game, behind West Texas A&M, which threw for 415 yards in its opener and was idle last week.
He has two top single-game performances in DII with a 321.5 pass efficiency and 16.8 yards per play in the season opener vs. Pace. His 375 yards, all in the first half, rank 6th. His 97-yard TD pass to R-So. WR
Robert Bleiler is the longest offensive play in DII this season.
Wagner was 13-for-20 vs. Pace and set school records for passing yards (375) and TDs (6) in a half and single-game pass efficiency. The 321.5 rating is the 3rd-highest in Division II since 2008.
He was 26-for-51 for 323 yards last week at IUP, becoming the 9th ESU QB with at least 50 attempts in a game. He joins
Matt Marshall as the only ESU QB's to throw for 300 yards in their first two career starts. Marshall had 897 passing yards through his first three career starts. Wagner can eclipse that mark with an even 200 yards vs. California.
WAGNER FEATURED ON NCAA.COM: Wagner's record-setting first career start was featured on NCAA.com's "Nine at Noon" on Wednesday, Sept. 7 as the No. 1 performance you might have missed from the previous week. His 6 TD passes were listed in a numerical rundown on usatoday.com's "Campus Rivalries" page.
REED, BLEILER STAND OUT: So. WR
Dusty Reed and R-So. WR
Robert Bleiler rank 5th and 6th in the PSAC and 1st and 2nd in the PSAC East, respectively, on the nation's No. 2-ranked passing offense.
Reed - 9 catches, 222 yards (111.0 ypg), 2 TDs
• Pace - 5 catches, 136 yards, 2 TDs (70, 5); also 1 rush for 14 yards
• IUP - 4 catches, 86 yards
Bleiler - 10 catches, 217 yards (108.5 ypg), 2 TDs
• Pace - 3 catches, 172 yards, 2 TDs (44, 97)
• IUP - 7 catches, 45 yards
Bleiler and Reed were the second set of ESU teammates to have their first career 100-yard receiving games in the same game and the first since Ernie Siegrist (192) and Scott Benoit (161) at Millersville in 1982.
WILLIAMS, ALL-PURPOSE BACK: Jr. TB
Kendrick Williams ranks 3rd in the PSAC and 20th in Division II with 173.5 all-purpose yards per game, with 175 yards vs. Pace and 172 yards at IUP.
• Pace - 9 carries, 101 yards; 3 kick returns, 74 yards
• IUP - 13 carries, 17 yards; 4 catches, 55 yards; 3 kick returns, 100 yards
He enters the Cal game with 1,858 career all-purpose yards, 142 away from becoming the 31st Warrior to reach the 2,000-yard mark in ESU's 38th season under Coach Douds.
KEEPING A CLEAN SHIRT: R-Sr. QB
Ray Wagner hasn't been sacked in 71 pass attempts this season. In his career, Wagner has thrown 134 passes and has been sacked just 5 times
PACE SETTER: Wagner has thrown for 698 yards through the first two games, the most in Division II. Five ESU QB's have thrown for at least 900 yards through the first three games of a season. Jimmy Terwilliger threw for 1,188 yards in the first three games in 2005, Damian Poalucci threw for 1,178 yards in 1996, and three other QB's (Terwilliger, Jeremy Palm, James Franklin) just eclipsed the 900-yard mark.
Terwilliger is the only ESU QB to throw for 300 yards in three straight games at any point in a season, including a school-record 8 straight - the last five in 2004 and first three in 2005.
MR. OFFICIAL, NO FLAGS, PLEASE: ESU ranks 1st in the PSAC in fewest penalty yards per game (25.0) and 1st in most penalty yards on its opponents (112.5).
The Warriors committed just one penalty vs. Pace, a false start on the first offensive play.
Last week, IUP was flagged 15 times for 174 yards - the 2nd-most penalty yards on an ESU opponent in 388 games under Douds. ESU was penalized 6 times for 45 yards, and the ensuing 129-yard differential is the largest discrepancy in Douds' tenure with the Warriors.
STOPPED IN THE RED ZONE: The Warriors and Vulcans have both struggled in the red zone this season, ranking 126th and 127th out of 152 teams in Division II.
ESU has scored on just 5 of its 11 trips (3 TD, 2 FG) after leading the PSAC in red zone offense in two of the last three seasons. Cal has scored on just 4 of its 9 trips (3 TD, 1 FG).
PASS/RUN OPTION: ESU has thrown for 300+ yards in its first two games and has topped the 300-yard mark in more than 20 percent (83 of 388) of its games under Douds. The Warriors are 59-24 when they throw for more than 300 yards.
In the running game, the Warriors piled up 211 yards vs. Pace, improving to 76-6-2 when hitting the 200-yard mark. They have won 28 straight games when running for 200 yards, a stretch that goes back to 2000.
