EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior midfielder Nick Fischer scored his third goal of the season with eight seconds left in the first half as East Stroudsburg University opened its PSAC men's soccer schedule with a 1-1, lightning-shortened tie against West Chester late into Wednesday night at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

The game didn't kick off until 7:50 p.m. after the Warriors' women's team played two overtimes against the defending PSAC champion Golden Rams and came away with a 2-2 tie. (RECAP)

More than 100 minutes were insufficient to settle the outcome of the men's game as well. A contest that included numerous injury stoppages, 39 shots, 35 fouls, four yellow cards and a red card early in the first overtime was called with 5:05 remaining in the second overtime after a potentially severe storm began moving through the area. The game was postponed at 10:20 and called approximately 10 minutes later.

Fischer's goal, assisted by senior midfielder Josh Arcona, stood up until West Chester's Neil Gallagher headed in a long ball by Andrew Solimeo in the 59th minute.

The Warriors (1-2-1, 0-0-1) had a couple of scoring chances, including a header by Fischer that was cleared off the line in the closing seconds, but were unable to get the winning goal as they began defense of their PSAC co-regular season championship from last season. ESU went to overtime in three of its nine PSAC games last season and produced a victory each time on its way to a 6-3 season and co-title with Shippensburg.

ESU sophomore Andrew Chongaway and West Chester (1-3-1, 0-2-1) keeper Kevin Marron both made six saves for their squads. The Golden Rams held a 23-16 advantage in shots and 9-0 nod in corner kicks in the contest.

ESU will travel to Millersville for a 6 p.m. game on Saturday. The Warriors edged the Marauders, 1-0, in the PSAC semifinals last season in a series that saw Millersville win the previous six meetings before ESU won both games in 2010.

Notes: ESU head coach Rob Berkowitz coached his first PSAC doubleheader and came away with a point in each contest after 214:55 of action – more than three-and a half hours . . Berkowitz is in his first season with the men's program and fifth with the women's program . . ESU's 2-2 tie in the women's game was just its second tie in the last 17 games against West Chester, which has won four of the last five PSAC titles . . the men are 9-0-2 in their last 11 meetings with West Chester going back to 2006.
