EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman
Lauren Buchanan-Dwyer and sophomore
Kerri McClay provided the scoring and East Stroudsburg University held Clarion to three shots on goal in a 2-0 win in their PSAC women's soccer opener on Friday afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Brittain Wagner had three saves for her second straight shutout for the Warriors (3-0, 1-0), who improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2005 and the sixth time in the program's 20th season.
Buchanan-Dwyer scored her first career goal on the first career assist for sophomore forward
Kaitlyn Hogue with 2:30 left in the first half. Junior midfielder
Cree Julian ripped a shot that was deflected, Hogue's header was cleared off the back line and Buchanan-Dwyer finally headed it home for the game's first goal.
McClay added a goal with 9:57 remaining in the second half when she gathered a ball played in by freshman forward
Courtney Keller and slotted it past Clarion (2-1, 0-1) goalkeeper Laura Saussol, who made six saves.
The Warriors held a 19-4 advantage in shots in the contest, 7-1 in the first half and 12-3 in the second half. They improved to 3-1-1 in PSAC openers under head coach
Rob Berkowitz, who is also coaching ESU's men's soccer team this season.
ESU outshot Alderson-Broaddus 14-4 and didn't allow a shot on goal in a 2-0 win on Tuesday in its last time out.
Wagner had the shutout in her first career start in goal against Alderson-Broaddus after starting all 18 games at left back last season. She was All-State and set a national high school record with 18 consecutive shutouts as a senior at Union-Endicott (N.Y.).
The Warriors have a quick turnaround for their next game, hosting Edinboro on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium. Edinboro plays Bloomsburg in the second game of Friday's doubleheader at the stadium as the games were moved to ESU due to flooding in Columbia County.
