BETHLEHEM - Sophomore Donovan Tolbert hit the NCAA Division II provisional qualifying standard in the triple jump, and sophomore Brandon Mercer won the men's 60m dash to pace East Stroudsburg University in its season-opening indoor track and field meet at Lehigh on Friday night.

Tolbert recorded a mark of 47-9, the fourth-best in school history, to surpass the provisional standard (46-7 1/4) and finish second in the meet.

Mercer clocked a time of 7.03 seconds to win the 60m dash, one-hundredth of a second off his freshman record last year. Mercer is coming off a redshirt freshman football season in which he averaged 31.9 yards per kick return, second-most in school history.

The Warriors had eight runner-up finishes, including Tolbert in the triple jump. The men's and women's teams combined for 27 PSAC qualifying marks on the opening weekend of the season.

For the women, sophomore Christina O'Connor was second in the high jump (5-5) and junior Laura Beimfohr and freshman Kirsten Muhaw tied for second in the pole vault (11-3 3/4). Beimfohr holds the school record (11-9 3/4) and Muhaw's mark ranks second in school history.

Senior Lauren Ventrella, coming off her second All-PSAC East honor as a forward in field hockey, was fifth in the 60m hurdles in 9.01 seconds - just off her school record of 8.94 she set as a freshman. Senior Aniyah Williams was ninth in 9.18 seconds, second-fastest in school history and a PR of 11-hundredths of a second. Williams also hit a mark of 17-4 1/4 in the long jump to finish sixth.

Junior Elizabeth Madden, another dual sport athlete who just finished the volleyball season, was eighth in the weight throw at 43-8 1/2. Madden was the PSAC runner-up and set the school record in the weight last winter.

On the men's side, sophomore Damien Boham came within a half-second of the school record in the 500m dash, placing second in 1:05.86 seconds. Negus Graham, a three-time All-American in the 400m, set the record of 1:05.48 in 2011.

Sophomore Travis Toth opened his second season by placing second in the weight with a mark of 54-11 1/4, a PR of almost 4 feet over his freshman record of 51-2 3/4. The event was won by ESU alumnus Paul Wagner, a two-time All-American in the hammer and multiple school record holder, at 61-5 1/2.

Junior Keith Parker-Washington (22.79) and sophomore Kyle Rickard (23.11) were second and fifth, respectively, in the 200m dash. They formed half of the second-place 4x400m relay as well, with Rickard, Parker-Washington, freshman Dmitri Mobley and Boham running 3:22.56 to etch the #6 time on ESU's top 10 list.

Two freshmen had PSAC qualifying marks in their debuts in the pole vault. Corey Smith tied for fifth at 13-9 1/4, and Chris Davis tied for ninth at 13-3 1/2.

Friday night's meet is the Warriors' first and only action until 2013, as they return on January 11 at the Kutztown Invitational.
