Russell Graham III tied his career-high with 19 points and added 6 rebounds and 7 assists in his final game at Koehler Fieldhouse as East Stroudsburg University prepared for the PSAC Tournament with an 77-66 win over Cheyney on Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors rallied from a 39-33 deficit at halftime to finish the regular season with a 17-11 (13-9) record and the No. 4 seed in the PSAC East. They will head to top seed Kutztown for the quarterfinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. as they make their sixth PSAC Tournament trip in seven seasons and look for their third straight berth in the semifinals. ESU won 83-70 at Kutztown in the quarterfinals last season.
Graham, ESU's second-leading scorer with 12.4 points per game and second in the PSAC with 5.4 assists per game, scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half to reach double figures for the 19th time in the last 21 games. He shot 7-for-10 from the field and 4-for-4 at the foul line.
Graham and senior forward
Eric Bryan, who missed his second straight game due to injury, were both recognized before the game. Bryan has played in 109 career games at ESU, seventh-most in school history, and ranks 11th with 61 career blocked shots. He is averaging 6.3 points and 5.6 rebounds, third on the team, in 26 starts this season and has 556 points and 440 rebounds in his four-year career for the Warriors.
Graham scored or assisted on 18 of the Warriors' first 28 points to start the second half, including a jumper and three-pointer on consecutive possessions after Cheyney pulled within one (54-53) on a three-pointer by Brandon Baylor with 9:42 remaining.
ESU led by at least four the rest of the way, and King answered another Baylor three that made it a four-point game (68-64) with an emphatic dunk on an assist from freshman guard
Whis Grant with 1:43 remaining. King went to the foul line on ESU's next two possessions, making 3-of-4, and blocked a layup by Baylor with the Warriors in front by nine in the final minute.
Johnson and King both had three dunks and combined for 39 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks to pace the Warriors. Johnson was 9-for-14 from the field and scored 14 of his 22 points in the first half before Graham and King authored 26 of ESU's 44 second-half points.
The Warriors led throughout most of the first half before Cheyney surged in front with a 17-6 run over the final six minutes. Freshman guard
Matt Tobin ended the stretch with a three-pointer on ESU's last possession of the half, making it a six-point game, and junior guard
Gerald Bridges, Jr. and Tobin both knocked down three's early in the second half to tie the game at 39-all and get the Warriors back in it.
Deshawn Curtis had 21 points and 14 rebounds, Baylor scored 17 and Jason Sabb had 16 points and 15 boards to lead Cheyney (4-22, 3-19). Sabb finishes the regular season as the PSAC's leading scorer with 20.3 points per game, just ahead of Kutztown's Devon McBride, who is averaging 20.1 per game entering the postseason.
