ESU Tops Alderson-Broaddus, 3-1, Heading into Match-up at No. 1 Tampa

LAKELAND, Fla. – Redshirt senior left-hander Eric Kline and sophomore Keenan Stare combined on a four-hitter and junior 3B Brian Ernst had two hits, an RBI and a run as East Stroudsburg University posted a 3-1 win over Alderson-Broaddus on Tuesday morning in Lakeland, Florida.

The Warriors (12-4) will complete their eight-game trip to Florida with a match-up at Tampa (16-3), ranked No. 1 nationally in Division II, tonight at 6 p.m. Links for live stats and video are available on esuwarriors.com.

Kline went 7.0 innings, allowing three hits and five walks and striking out three, for his first career win for ESU, which is 5-2 on the trip going into tonight's game.

Stare, who has won his first four starts this season, struck out four in 2.0 innings in his first relief appearance of the year to nail down his third career save. He struck out the side around a two-out walk in the eighth and pitched around a one-out single in the ninth. He has a 1.47 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 18.1 innings this spring.

Ernst hit a leadoff double and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore 1B Mark Romano to get the Warriors on the board in the second inning.

ESU took a 3-0 lead with a pair of two-out runs in the third. Junior OF Eric Boyer was hit by a pitch, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Ernst, who advanced to second on the play. Sophomore OF Chris Knott followed with an RBI double, his 10th extra-base hit of the season, to plate Ernst and make it 3-0.

A-B's Seth Martin gave up one more hit the rest of the way, a bunt single by junior OF Zac Menendez in the fourth. Martin went 6.0 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts. Bobby Colton struck out two and walked two in 2.0 innings in relief.

The Battlers scored their lone run in the sixth when David Bryan had a leadoff single, moved up on a wild pitch and groundout and scored when Bobby McLaughlin beat out a potential double-play ball for a fielders' choice.

ESU enters tonight's game at Tampa ranked No. 3 in the Atlantic Region in this week's NCBWA poll.

The Warriors will take on a Tampa squad that has played in 12 straight NCAA Tournaments, won six regional titles since 2000 and claimed back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007.
