MANSFIELD – East Stroudsburg University scored four runs in the top of the seventh for a 5-1 win in the opener, then rallied from a 5-0 deficit for a 10-5 victory in the nightcap to sweep Sunday's doubleheader at Mansfield and win this weekend's PSAC East series, 3-1.

The series win is ESU's first against Mansfield since 2007 and just the fifth since 1985 as the Warriors (17-6, 3-1) opened their conference schedule after an opening week bye. ESU had a 3-0 win in the first game Friday behind a three-hit shutout from junior Brian Ernst before Mansfield (7-20, 1-7) posted a 4-2 win in game two.

The two schools had split their four-game series in each of the last three seasons, including last year, when ESU swept the Mounties on the last day of the regular season to earn its second straight trip to the PSAC Tournament.

Junior catcher Nico Delerme, who was 8-for-13 at the plate over the weekend, delivered the go-ahead hit in both games on Sunday.

In the opener, he followed a one-out double by sophomore OF Chris Knott with an RBI double of his own to break a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh. He scored on an RBI single by freshman 3B Robert Patete, and after a single and stolen base by senior 2B Ryan Guarino, senior SS Evan Gallagher had a two-out, two-RBI single to give ESU a 5-1 lead.

Redshirt senior left-hander Eric Kline, sophomore Colin Taylor and senior Ryan Beck combined on a one-hitter on the mound, with Kline charged with just an unearned run in the second.

Kline got a no-decision in his first career conference start but shut down the Mounties as the ESU offense struggled to score runs early, leaving 12 runners on base in the first six innings before breaking through in the seventh.

Taylor was credited with the win, striking out the only hitter he faced with a runner on in the sixth. Senior Ryan Beck struck out one and walked one with a four-run lead in the final frame.

The Warriors used a seven-run fifth inning to overcome an early 5-0 deficit through two frames in the second game.

ESU sent 10 batters to the plate in the decisive inning, starting with singles by Delerme, Patete and Guarino to load the bases with nobody out. Junior OF Zac Menendez drove in ESU's first run with an RBI single, and Patete scored on a wild pitch before Gallagher reached on an error with Guarino and Menendez coming home to get the Warriors within 5-4.

Mansfield brought on reliever Curtis Harpster to get the first two outs of the inning, but he proceeded to walk redshirt senior DH Jason Kelmer and Knott to load the bases for Delerme. The junior singled to left center to plate Gallagher and Kelmer with the tying and go-ahead runs, and Knott also scored on an error on the play to give ESU a 7-5 lead.

Junior pitcher Colin Kelly, who came on in the fourth inning, threw a 1-2-3 fifth with a pair of strikeouts before the Warriors manufactured two insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Guarino and Menendez both had bunt singles, Guarino scored on a sacrifice fly by Gallagher and Menendez stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by junior OF Eric Boyer for a 9-5 advantage.

ESU tagged on one more run in the seventh as Delerme hit a one-out double, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Patete.

On the mound, three relievers – junior left-hander Mike Glassic, Kelly and Taylor – combined to hold Mansfield to one run on six hits over the last 5.1 innings after coming on for sophomore Keith Moyer.

Glassic (1.1 IP, 1 run, 4 hits) gave up two runs (one inherited) after entering in the second and pitched around two hits in the third. Kelly and Taylor both threw 2.0 innings and gave up one hit each, with Kelly earning the win and Taylor coming in with a 9-5 lead in the sixth.

The Warriors had 13 hits in both games after compiling just nine hits in the first half of the weekend series on Friday.

Five players had two hits in the first game – Menendez, Boyer, Kelmer, Delerme and Patete.

Menendez was 4-for-5 at the top of the order in the second game, while the bottom of the lineup – Delerme (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Patete (2-for-4, RBI, run) and Guarino (2-for-4, 2 runs) – combined to go 7-for-12 to spark the offense.

ESU hit .315 for the weekend, led by Delerme (8-for-13, 4 RBI, 3 runs) and Menendez (6-for-14, 3 walks, 4 runs). Patete was 4-for-10 with two RBI and two runs in his first conference action.

On the mound, Ernst set the tone with his three-hit, 11-strikeout performance in the 3-0 win in Friday's opener.

Taylor saw action in three games and threw 5.0 innings, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

ESU is back on the field on Monday with a single nine-inning game at Philadelphia University. The Rams make the trip to ESU for a single game on Thursday at 3 p.m. before the Warriors take on red-hot West Chester (16-1, 4-0) in a four-game series next weekend.
