No. 8 West Chester Completes Four-Game Series Win over ESU Baseball

EAST STROUDSBURG – No. 8-ranked West Chester improved to 22-1 and set a PSAC record with its 17th straight win after taking the second half of this weekend's PSAC East series over East Stroudsburg University on Sunday afternoon at Mitterling Field.

ESU (18-11, 3-5), which took three of four from West Chester (22-1, 8-0) last season, fell 8-2 and 9-3 on Sunday after the doubleheader was pushed back a day due to rain. West Chester posted 7-3 and 9-5 wins on Friday.

Dave Stieg scattered seven hits in a complete game effort in game 1, and Dylan Porter (4.2 IP, 8 hits, 3 runs, 2 earned) and Jordan Lehman (2.1 IP, 0 hits) had the win and the save in game 2.

ESU held early advantages in both games, leading 2-0 through the second in the opener and 1-0 after the first inning of the second game, but a potent West Chester offense came back to claim the lead.

West Chester only outhit ESU, 35-29, in the series but the Warriors issued 20 walks, six hit batters and committed nine errors. Thirteen of West Chester's 33 runs for the weekend were unearned. The Golden Rams walked 12, hit two and committed four errors, allowing 13 runs (10 earned).

Junior OF Zac Menendez had a .600 on-base percentage, going 4-for-10 and drawing five walks, and was 2-for-3 on stolen base attempts in the series. He has a .517 on-base percentage and has drawn 34 walks and is 22-for-24 on the base paths through 29 games. He is approaching ESU records for walks (38) and stolen bases (24) in a season.

Junior 1B Brian Ernst was 5-for-12 with two doubles and five RBI, senior 2B Ryan Guarino was 4-for-9 and freshman 3B Robert Patete was 4-for-11 with a double. Redshirt senior 3B/DH Jason Kelmer was 3-for-9 and walked twice for a .455 on-base percentage and junior OF Eric Boyer was 3-for-11 with four walks for a .467 on-base percentage.

Seven Warriors had one hit in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Knott hit a one-out double in the second and scored on a base hit by Kelmer, who moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by junior C Nico Delerme.

Ernst and Patete were both 2-for-3 as ESU had eight hits in game 2. The Warriors scored an unearned run in the first and Ernst had a two RBI single in the fifth.

West Chester was led offensively in the series by Jordan Wlodarczyk (7-for-14, 4 RBI), who finished March with a batting average over .500, and Jack Provine (7-for-14, 3 RBI, 5 runs). Joe Wendle, an All-America candidate at second base, was 4-for-11 with a home run, 5 RBI, 5 runs and drew five walks.

ESU won its first PSAC East series last weekend, 3-1 against Mansfield, and takes on Bloomsburg in the third of six conference weekends next Friday and Saturday. The series begins at Bloomsburg before coming back to Mitterling Field on Saturday for Military Appreciation Day, beginning at 1 p.m.
