EAST STROUDSBURG – Alex Manea assisted on the game's first goal and scored the second, both in the second half, as Mercyhurst topped East Stroudsburg University 2-0 in the PSAC men's soccer opener for both schools on Friday afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Austin Solomon scored in the 55th minute and Manea added the insurance goal in the 71st minute for the Lakers (2-3, 1-0), who have played in the NCAA Tournament the last two seasons despite not qualifying for the PSAC Tournament. ESU knocked off the No. 12-ranked Lakers, 3-1, in last year's meeting.
Both goalkeepers made three saves, freshman
Callum Hampson for ESU (1-4, 0-1) and Diego Gustin for Mercyhurst. Hampson made the first start of his career after playing the final 67 minutes in the Warriors' 1-0 (2OT) win over Dominican on Monday.
Mercyhurst held an 11-7 advantage in shots, the first time the Warriors have been outshot this season.
ESU hosts No. 9 Gannon on Saturday at 12 p.m. in its second game this weekend. The Golden Knights are 4-0 entering tonight's league opener at Bloomsburg.
