EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University redshirt sophomore quarterback
Matt Soltes and Bloomsburg senior tailback Franklyn Quiteh traded touchdowns for most of the afternoon, but the No. 6-ranked Huskies had the last two scores to outlast ESU, 52-38, in PSAC East football on Saturday afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Soltes was 32-for-48 for 476 yards and five touchdowns, and added 66 rushing yards for 542 yards of total offense, while Quiteh set a Bloomsburg single-game record with 304 yards and four touchdowns on 28 carries.
Soltes became the 4th QB in PSAC history with at least two career games of 500 yards of total offense, joining ESU's Damian Poalucci (4) and Jimmy Terwilliger (2), and Shippensburg's Zach Zulli (2). Soltes had a PSAC record 666 yards last year at LIU Post.
They led their respective offenses which combined for 1,247 total yards, fourth-most in ESU history. Bloomsburg gained 627 yards on 62 plays, while the Warriors had 620 yards on 73 plays. It also marks the fourth time that both ESU and its opponent have gained 600 yards in a game.
Bloomsburg (7-0, 4-0) remains undefeated with its eighth straight win to even the all-time series at 38-38-2. ESU (4-3, 1-3) was coming off a 34-20 loss at No. 17-ranked West Chester and faced top 20 teams in consecutive weeks for the first time since the AFCA poll was introduced in 2000.
The Warriors trailed 14-0 early in the second quarter and battled back for most of the afternoon, catching the Huskies at 21-21 with 27 seconds left in the first half on Soltes' third TD pass, a two-yard shot to R-Sr. WR
Robert Bleiler.
Bloomsburg led 24-21 at the half, however, as the Huskies covered 60 yards in three plays and Danny Fisher made a 34-yard field goal at the buzzer.
The Huskies' lead stayed between three and 10 points for the next 20 minutes, until a 31-yard field goal by senior kicker
Taylor Groff, a defensive stop and a one-handed, 28-yard touchdown catch by R-So. WR
Jon Schnaars tied the game at 38-38 with 9:58 remaining.
Bloomsburg responded with a seven play, 75-yard drive - the key play a 32-yard pass from Tim Kelly to tight end Aaron Allison on third-and-21 from the ESU 49 - and Quiteh scored from 17 yards on the next play to make it 45-38 in favor of the Huskies with 6:23 to play.
ESU drove into Bloomsburg territory on a 24-yard run by Soltes, but his third-and-long pass was intercepted by JP Patrick at the 30. Quiteh broke a 29-yard run on third-and-three to keep Bloomsburg's drive alive, then had a 32-yard run to the one before Kelly plunged in for his second rushing TD and a 52-38 lead with 1:40 left.
Soltes - who left last week's game at West Chester game early in the second quarter - had two 100-yard receivers in Bleiler (8-130, 2 TD), who had his fourth 100-yard game in five weeks, and So. WR
Gerard Wendowski (7-111, both career-highs). Schnaars had five catches for 60 yards and two TD, and R-Jr. WR
Steven Jones had five catches for 82 yards and a TD.
The Warriors gained 144 rushing yards led by Soltes (12 carries, 66 yards) and R-Fr. TB
Robert Healy (12-73), who moved into second on ESU's freshman rushing list with 670 yards this fall.
Bloomsburg, fifth in Division II in rushing with 341.2 yards per game, ran for 389 yards on 39 carries and Quiteh broke BU's school record of 300 yards set by Jerry Marks in 1991. Dai'Shon Munger had eight carries for 48 yards, and Kelly ran three times for 37 yards and two TD, including a 41-yard score.
Kelly was 17-for-22 passing for 238 yards and a 17-yard touchdown to Glenn Hutton, Jr., who had eight catches for 113 yards.
Soltes' 542 total yards and 476 passing yards are both the second-most in his career. His total offense is tied for 6th in school history and his passing yards rank 9th. He set a PSAC record 666 total yards, including 535 passing yards, in a 45-37 win at LIU Post last fall.
ESU put together two drives into Bloomsburg territory to open the game but had a missed field goal and a punt, before Quiteh broke a 46-yard run for the first of his four TD's with 4:38 left in the first quarter.
Kelly's 17-yard TD pass to Hutton, Jr. made it 14-0 with 12:00 left in the second quarter before the Warriors got on the board with three scores in the next 10 minutes.
Soltes hit Jones for a 35-yard TD, his seventh of the season and the 15th of his career for the junior tight end, to cap a three-play, 78-yard drive that took just 1:19.
Bloom pushed its lead to 21-7 as Kelly kept on a third-and-two and scampered 41 yards for the score with 8:47 left in the first half.
The Warriors answered right back as Soltes took ESU 93 yards in five plays and his Schnaars for an 18-yard TD. After an interception by Fr. FS
Dean Vitale, his fourth of the season, on a pass by wide receiver Tony Peregrin, Soltes drove the offense the ensuing 65 yards in 11 plays.
His two-yard TD pass to Bleiler tied it at 21-21, before Quiteh broke a 20-yard run and Kelly hit Hutton, Jr. for gains of 13 and 27 yards to set up Fisher's go-ahead 34-yard field goal at the end of the half.
Bloomsburg received the second-half kickoff and drove 53 yards on eight plays to take a 31-21 lead, with Quiteh taking a screen pass for 14 yards to the two and scoring his second rushing TD of the game to cap the drive.
ESU once again struck quickly, going 65 yards on four plays after Braden Drexler's kickoff went out of bounds. A pass interference call put the ball on the 44, and Soltes hooked up with Bleiler down the middle on the next play to bring the Warriors within 31-28.
Quiteh ripped off a 51-yard run to stretch the lead back to 10 points (38-28) with 7:12 left, and the Huskies got a defensive stop. ESU forced a punt to get the ball right back, but Soltes was intercepted by DJ Robinson on the next snap - his first in 211 passes since the first quarter of the season opener vs. AIC, a streak which is believed to be a PSAC record.
The Warriors regained possession just two plays later, setting up an eventful fourth quarter. Vitale forced a fumble by Munger which was recovered by Jr. LB
Cody Simcox at the Bloomsburg 39, and Groff's 31-yard field goal with 13:05 left in regulation made it 38-31.
Another ESU defensive stop gave the Warriors the ball at their own 25, and Soltes tied it five plays later. He hit Healy for 17 yards, Bleiler for 13, Wendowski for 17 and Schnaars for 28 yards and a spectacular one-handed touchdown catch to knot the score at 38-38 with 9:58 left.
Those would be ESU's last points, and Bloomsburg went 75 yards on seven plays for their go-ahead score, then got a second interception before closing it out.
ESU will look for its fifth win of the season next Saturday with a trip to Kutztown (1-6, 1-3). Kickoff is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
