Warriors Basketball Hosts Mansfield Wednesday Night

EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior forward Jessica Martin had 19 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots and East Stroudsburg University scored the final eight points, surviving a huge comeback by Mansfield for a 63-56 win in the PSAC East women's basketball opener for both schools on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Senior guard Andrea Veres scored 10 points and freshman forward Allison Howard added six points and 12 rebounds for ESU (1-1, 1-0), which led 43-20 with 1:36 left in the first half and 43-27 at halftime before Mansfield (0-3, 0-1) stormed back.

Katie Fitzpatrick led Mansfield with 20 points and 13 rebounds, and gave the Mounties their first lead of the game (50-49) with a three-point play with 8:04 left.

The Warriors trailed 56-55 with 3:18 remaining but blanked Mansfield down the stretch. An offensive rebound and putback by Martin at the end of the shot clock gave ESU the lead for good with 2:01 left, then she hit one-of-two free throws and sophomore guard Helena Gemmell grabbed the offensive rebound as the Warriors led 58-56 with 44 seconds to play.

Junior guard Ryann Fiascki missed a pair at the line but Martin gathered the offensive board. A foul at midcourt led to a technical foul on Mansfield head coach Allison Tagliaferri, and Howard knocked down both free throws for a 60-56 lead. Sophomore guard Melissa Poderis made one-of-two, then Gemmell had a steal on Mansfield's next possession to put the game out of reach.

ESU used a 17-2 run to get breathing room in the first half.

Martin's three blocks give her nine through two games, and 146 in her career, tied for 25th in PSAC history and second in ESU's record book.

THE MATCH-UP: East Stroudsburg University hosts Mansfield in the PSAC East opener for both schools tonight at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors, coming off a 66-57 loss to No. 11-ranked Holy Family, entertain the Mounties (0-2), who fell to Merrimack (86-77) and Le Moyne (83-67) to start their season.

ESU was 2-0 against Mansfield last year, winning 67-39 at home and 66-59 on the road. The Warriors advanced to the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 2008, falling at Millersville, 42-31, in the opening round. They return 4 starters from last year's team.

LAST TIME OUT: Jr. F Jessica Martin had 13 points, 13 rebounds and 6 blocks and Fr. F Allison Howard had 12 points and 13 rebounds in her first career game in ESU's 66-57 loss to No. 11 Holy Family. So. G Melissa Poderis was ESU's third-leading scorer with 7 points off the bench, and Jr. G Ryann Fiascki had 6 points and 5 rebounds. So. G Helena Gemmell, 3rd in the PSAC in steals (2.7) last year, had 6 in 17 minutes.  (Recap)

WARRIORS NOTES: Martin and Howard are the 3rd set of ESU teammates in the last 11 years with double-doubles in the same game – and the first to both post at least 12 points and 12 rebounds ... Martin, a 2-time All-PSAC East 2nd team selection, had her 11th career double-double after posting 6 as a sophomore and 4 as a freshman ... it was her 6th double-double with at least 5 blocked shots ... ESU outrebounded Mansfield, 90-54, over 2 games last year ... Martin averaged 10.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg and 3.0 blocks vs. MU.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTIES: Mansfield has 4 players averaging at least 12.5 points per game - So. G Katie Fitzpatrick (16.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 6.0 apg), Jr. G Megan McSwain (15.5), Jr. G Alyssa DeRichie (12.5) and Sr. F Jena Matter (12.5) ... McSwain averaged 13.5 points in 2 games vs. ESU last year.

EAST STROUDSBURG - Junior guard Whis Grant scored 23 points, becoming the third player to score 1,000 career points as a junior in school history, as East Stroudsburg University opened defense of its PSAC East regular season title with an 88-65 win over Mansfield on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Grant scored nine points in the first half as the Warriors opened a 52-30 lead - then scored 10 of ESU's first 17 in the first 6:30 of the second half to hit the 1,000-point mark. He reached the plateau with a three-pointer from the right corner, giving the Warriors their largest lead of the game (69-39) with 13:23 remaining.

Grant, last year's PSAC East Player of the Year and an All-America honorable mention selection, entered the game with 925 career points, the most through two years in school history and four more than all-time leading scorer Jonathan Roberts (2,218 career points) had as a sophomore.

Grant finished the night with 1,004 career points, needing 19 to reach 1,000 entering the game. He scored 56 points in the first four games, leading ESU with 14.0 points per game.

The Warriors have opened 5-0 (1-0 PSAC East) for just the fourth time since 1943. ESU's 13-0 start in 2009-10 is tied for the school's best-ever undefeated start to a season.

Freshman forward Rasheed Moore, the reigning PSAC East Freshman of the Week, had 13 points and six rebounds, and redshirt junior guard Will Brown added 10 points off the bench. The Warriors had 11 players reach the scoring column with junior forward Lamont Tillery (6 points, 7 rebounds) leading the team on the backboards.

ESU, 11th in Division II in turnover margin (+4.9) last year, held a 28-15 advantage against the Mounties and a 31-6 edge in points off turnovers.

Junior Joe Bell, a two-time All-PSAC East selection, had 22 points and eight rebounds to pace Mansfield (1-3, 0-1).

THE MATCH-UP: ESU, off to a 4-0 start, opens PSAC East play against Mansfield tonight at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors are coming off their 2nd PSAC East regular season title in 4 years, 4th PSAC Final 4 and 3rd trip to the NCAA DII Tournament since 2010 as they tip off divisional play.

LAST TIME OUT: ESU went on a 29-12 run to start the 2nd half, including 4 3-pointers by Jr. G Whis Grant, to come back from a 40-37 halftime deficit in a 79-72 win at UDC. Grant had 18 points for the 2nd straight Saturday and Sr. F Zechariah Runkle and Fr. F Rasheed Moore had 11 each.  (Recap)
