ESU Baseball Drops Series Finale at Saint Augustine’s, 11-6

CARY, N.C. – Saint Augustine's jumped out to a 6-2 lead through three innings and went on to post an 11-6 win over East Stroudsburg University in the final game of this weekend's season-opening three-game series on Sunday at the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

Senior 2B Joe Bennie went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs at the top of the order, including a two-run home run for the Warriors' first round-tripper of the season. Redshirt freshman 3B Drew Hercik, junior 1B Mike Tenaglia and junior OF Chris Knott all had two hits each.

Saint Augustine's won the series, 2-1, after both schools split 5-1 decisions on Saturday. Junior Matt Smith threw 4.1 shutout innings in his ESU debut to earn the win in the nightcap.

Freshman SS John Armbrust singled in the eighth inning for his first career hit.

Senior left-hander Michael Muglia (2.0 IP), senior left-hander Mike Glassic (2.1 IP, 2 hits, 1 run, 4 strikeouts) and redshirt sophomore left-hander Max Mueller (1.0 IP) were the Warriors' most effective pitchers.  Freshman Brandon Holup made his first career start and junior transfers Jake Ruch and Rob Pennypacker both saw their first career innings on the mound.

Bennie was 8-for-13 (.615) with a double, triple, home run, three RBI and four runs in his first series for the Warriors after transferring from Division I La Salle. Hercik, a transfer from Delaware, was 5-for-10 and Tenaglia, a two-time NJCAA All-America at Northampton CC, was 3-for-8 with a double.

ESU hit .272 in the series, compared to .244 for Saint Augustine's, but the Falcons took two of three games.

The Warriors are off until February 23-24 when they head back to North Carolina for a four-game set with Chowan, which went 1-2 against PSAC West power Mercyhurst this weekend.
