Warriors Basketball Hosts Mansfield Wednesday Night

EAST STROUDSBURG - East Stroudsburg University held a 49-22 rebounding advantage and forced 34 turnovers to secure the sixth and final playoff spot in the PSAC East women's basketball field with a 67-39 win over Mansfield on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Junior guard Andrea Veres scored 13 points and senior forward Fayola Moise had 10 points and eight rebounds to lead the scoring for the Warriors (7-15, 6-12), who hold a four-game lead over Mansfield (4-18, 2-16) with four games remaining and earned the tiebreaker by sweeping the season series.

Sophomore forward Jessica Martin had eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks and became the ninth sophomore in ESU history to reach the 500-career point mark, finishing with 505. Senior guard Barb Borst had eight points, sophomore guard Ryann Fiascki scored seven, freshman center Helena Gemmell had six points, eight rebounds and three blocks and freshman guard Helena Gemmell added five points, five rebounds and four steals.

ESU led 19-11 with 6:40 left before closing the first half on an 11-2 run to lead 30-13 at intermission. The Warriors held Mansfield without a field goal in that stretch, then had a 10-0 run early in the second half to blow the game open.

The Warriors will play in the PSAC first round on Saturday, March 2 at a site and opponent to be determined. They finished a three-game homestand and are on the road Saturday at PSAC East co-leader Shippensburg.

THE MATCH-UP: East Stroudsburg University hosts Mansfield with a chance to secure the 6th and final playoff spot in the PSAC East. The Warriors (6-15, 5-12) have a three-game lead over Mansfield (4-17, 2-15) with five games left and can force an insurmountable four-game lead with a win tonight. This is the first season the PSAC has had an expanded playoff field of six teams. The Warriors won the first meeting at Mansfield, 66-59, behind 14 points from So. G Ryann Fiascki and 13 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals and 4 blocks from So. F Jessica Martin.

LAST TIME OUT: ESU forced OT but fell to Kutztown, 76-65, on Sunday at Koehler Fieldhouse. Fiascki and Jr. G Andrea Veres both scored 13 points, Martin had 10 points and 9 rebounds, Sr. F Fayola Moise had 7 points, 11 rebounds and 4 steals and Fr. G Helena Gemmell had 2 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals for the Warriors. ESU tied it on a layup by Martin (from Fiascki) with 6.5 seconds left but KU was 14-14 at the foul line in OT.

WARRIORS NOTES: Martin was named ESU's Player of the Year on Tuesday ... she s 4th in the PSAC in blocked shots (2.2) and 5th in rebounds (8.7), 17th with 11.6 points per game, and 18th in DII in blocks ... she has 497 career points, and can become the 9th Warrior to score 500 points as a sophomore ... So. G Ryann Fiascki leads the PSAC and is 20th in DII in free throw % (86.8, 66-76) ... she led the PSAC and set a PSAC freshman record last year (87.4, 83-95) ... Gemmell is 3rd in the PSAC in steals (2.7) ... Sr. G Barb Borst is 3rd in ESU history with 118 career 3-pointers ... Jr. G Andrea Veres leads active Warriors in scoring (684) and is 5th with 106 3-pointers.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTIES: Mansfield is led by Jena Matter (10.2 ppg, 6.3 rpg) with 6 players also averaging 6+ ppg - Katie Fitzpatrick (9.5), Kayla Espigh (8.3), Julia Stevenson (7.9), Megan McSwain (6.9), Shaleta Heyward (6.7) and Alyssa DeRichie (6.6), who had 18 points and 9 boards on Jan. 16.

EAST STROUDSBURG - No. 9-ranked East Stroudsburg University, playing with a top-10 national ranking for the first time in school history, tied a school single-season record with its 14th consecutive win and improved to 20-2 (17-1 PSAC) with an 83-58 win over Mansfield in PSAC East men's basketball on Wednesday night at Koehler Fieldhouse.

Senior forward Terrance King had 20 points, eight rebounds and moved into a tie for 10th on ESU's career scoring list with 1,248 points, part of a historic night at Koehler. The Warriors matched the single-season winning streak set in 1940-41, recorded their third 20-win season in four years (and eighth in school history), and secured a home game in the PSAC quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 5.

The Warriors' top two scorers, sophomore guard Whis Grant and senior forward Duane Johnson, combined for 14 points - well below their season average of 32 - but a host of players filled the void, starting with King. The senior from East Stroudsburg North had his 10th career 20-point game and matched former standout Juwan Justice on the school's all-time scoring list.

Senior forward Gerald Bridges scored 12 points on a perfect 4-for-4 mark from the three-point line, Grant scored eight points, junior forward Zechariah Runkle had seven and freshman forward Dajon Todmann added eight points off the bench.

The Warriors broke the game open with a 25-9 run over 10 minutes midway through the second half after holding a 48-28 advantage at halftime, as Bridges banked in a 25-footer at the buzzer.

Joe Bell had 20 points and eight rebounds, Charles Becoats had 16 points and six boards and Onyema Utti scored 10 points for Mansfield (6-16, 4-14).

ESU can set the single-season winning streak record, tie another school record with its 10th straight road win, and clinch at least a share of the third PSAC East regular season title in school history on Saturday afternoon at Shippensburg.

NABC DII poll release  l  Grant named Lehigh Valley Small College Player of the Year

THE MATCH-UP: ESU (19-2, 16-1) has a 13-game winning streak, the 4th-longest active streak in DII, entering tonight's game vs. Mansfield at Koehler Fieldhouse. The Warriors have a three-game lead over West Chester for the PSAC East regular season title with five games left, and can also secure a home game in the PSAC quarterfinals with a win tonight. ESU's single-season record for consecutive victories is 14, set in 1940-41.

LAST TIME OUT: ESU held off Kutztown for a 64-60 win on Sunday. Sr. F Duane Johnson (20 points, 7 rebounds), So. G Whis Grant (13 points, 5 assists), Sr. F Gerald Bridges (10 points) and Sr. F Terrance King (10 points, 8 rebounds) led the way and the Warriors had a +9 advantage in turnovers.

WARRIORS NOTES: ESU's #9 ranking is the highest in school history (#12 in February 2010) ... Warriors were ranked #13 last week ... Grant was named the Lehigh Valley Small College Player of the Year on Tuesday - joining Rich Baker (2003-04) as Warriors to earn the award ... ESU is also on a school-record 11-game PSAC road winning streak ... head coach Jeff Wilson is 180-122 in 11 years ...
