Highlights

EAST STROUDSBURG – Junior outfielder Chris Knott hit the game-tying home run in the sixth and a walk-off single in the eighth inning of a 3-2 win in the opener, and added a two-run triple in an 8-0 win in game two as East Stroudsburg University swept a non-conference doubleheader against the University of the Sciences on Saturday at Mitterling Field.

ESU (12-6) completed a 5-0 week with four pitchers combining on a three-hit shutout in the nightcap. Junior Matt Smith started and didn't allow a hit in 4.0 innings of work to improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Warriors opened the week with a 7-5 win over Nyack on Tuesday, and swept a doubleheader at Saint Rose (N.Y.) on Thursday, 6-1 and 15-8.

Knott's heroics lifted the Warriors in the opener, going 3-for-4 in the game and 5-for-7 with a double, triple, homer, five RBI and three runs scored on the afternoon.

USciences (9-10) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth, but Knott tied it in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out home run to right-center.

Junior Keenan Stare, who relieved senior Brian Ernst (3.0 IP, 1 hit, 1 unearned run) in the fourth, threw the final 5.0 innings (3 hits, 1 run) and held USciences scoreless in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to earn the win.

The Warriors went down in order in the seventh, but senior OF Eric Boyer led off the eighth with a single and ultimately scored the winning run. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ernst, third on a flyout to center by junior catcher Eric Forth, and came home on Knott's two-out single.

In the second game, ESU scored all eight runs in the first three innings to break it open early. The Warriors had 14 hits, including two-hit games from Knott, Boyer, Forth, senior 2B Joe Bennie and redshirt sophomore OF Andy Brandstetter.

On the mound, Smith struck out three, walked two and didn't allow a hit in 4.0 innings. Senior LHP Mike Glassic, junior Keith Moyer and freshman Brandon Holup all threw an inning in relief.

ESU took a 1-0 lead in the first when redshirt freshman 3B Drew Hercik drew a one-out walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Boyer.

The Warriors got four more in the second, sparked by back-to-back doubles by Forth and Knott to start the inning. Brandstetter had an infield single, junior SS Eric Linares lifted a sacrifice fly, Bennie singled and Boyer had a two RBI single to cap the inning.

Knott hit a two-run triple in the third to score redshirt freshman Matt Walewski and Forth, and scored on an RBI groundout by Brandstetter for an 8-0 lead.

Boyer was 4-for-5 on the day with three walks and three RBI, moving into fifth on ESU's career list with 107 RBI. He leads the Warriors with a .444 average (28-for-63) and 20 RBI, and hit .588 (10-for-17) with five RBI, eight runs and a .696 on-base percentage this week.

Ernst, a returning All-PSAC East first team utility selection, saw his first action since March 15 and made his first appearance on the mound since March 2.

The Warriors are at Philadelphia University for a single non-conference game on Wednesday and return to PSAC East action next weekend with four games against Mansfield. ESU was 1-3 in its opening PSAC East series against No. 9-ranked Shippensburg last weekend. First pitch on Saturday at Mitterling Field is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Military Appreciation Day.
