EAST STROUDSBURG – Redshirt freshman 3B
Drew Hercik legged out an infield single for East Stroudsburg University's fourth walk-off win of the season as the Warriors outlasted Philadelphia University, 2-1, for a 10-inning win in non-conference baseball on Tuesday afternoon at Mitterling Field.
The win gives the Warriors (25-12) their fourth 25-win season in the last five years, and the eighth in school history, as they head into the final two weekends of PSAC East action. ESU is 9-7 in divisional games, tied with West Chester for third in the seven-team division.
ESU had 13 hits, but used two walks and a balk to score the winning run in the 10th. Redshirt sophomore OF
Andy Brandstetter and junior OF
Chris Knott both drew two-out walks, Brandstetter moved to third on a balk and scored on Hercik's single to deep short.
Junior
Jake Ruch earned the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless, hitless relief for the Warriors. Freshman
Brandon Holup went 5.0 innings, with two strikeouts, three walks and two hits allowed, and senior left-hander
Mike Glassic went 3.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts.
The Warriors broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning as senior 2B
Joe Bennie hit a one-out single, stole second, moved to third on a single by senior 1B
Brian Ernst and scored on a base hit by senior OF
Eric Boyer.
Philadelphia U got the run back in the top of the eighth on a two-out single by Rick Reigner.
ESU threatened in the ninth inning, advancing the winning run to second with one out, before closing the deal in the 10th.
Ernst (3-for-5) and freshman OF
John Armbrust (3-for-4) both had three hits for the Warriors and Bennie and Hercik were both 2-for-5 on the day. Bennie belted his third triple of the season.
Ernst hit his 43rd career double, one away from tying ESU's school record.
The Warriors take on Kutztown in this weekend's four-game PSAC East series, hosting the Golden Bears in the first half on Friday at 1 p.m. at Mitterling Field.
