EAST STROUDSBURG – Rising redshirt sophomore quarterback Matt Soltes threw three touchdown passes in four series with the first-team offense as East Stroudsburg University finished its spring practice schedule with its annual Saturday evening scrimmage, held tonight at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

Soltes, the reigning PSAC East Freshman of the year, threw touchdowns of 45 yards to sophomore Brandon Mercer, 12 yards to senior Dusty Reed and 25 yards to redshirt sophomore Jon Schnaars to complete his work for the day. He also had a pair of big runs, a 17-yard scramble before the first TD and a 29-yarder to set up his TD pass to Reed.

Soltes was the fourth quarterback in PSAC history and first non-senior to throw for 2,500 yards and rush for 500 yards last season, throwing for 2,622 yards and 21 TD and running for 536 yards and two scores. He led DII freshmen in total offense (315.8 yards per game) and pass efficiency (157.2) last fall.

The Warriors' defense came away with three interceptions, by freshman safety Dean Vitale, sophomore corner Rashard Scott and sophomore corner Teron Dobbs. They also produced two fumble recoveries.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Bruce Campbell hit redshirt freshman receiver Anthony Nyers for a 44-yard gain on his first play from scrimmage. Sophomore wide receiver Joe Welk ran for 46 yards on an end-around on the final play of the evening.

The Warriors, 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the PSAC East last year, enter their 40th season under head coach Denny Douds next fall. They open the season against American International on Thursday, September 5 at 6:05 p.m. at Eiler-Martin Stadium.

Soltes and Reed, a two-time All-PSAC East first team wide receiver, headline the offense going into the 2013 campaign. Redshirt junior defensive tackle Bryan Thomson is the reigning PSAC East Defensive Player of the Year, and senior kicker Taylor Groff was a consensus All-Region first team selection in 2012.
