Saturday: Lehigh Games recap
PHILADELPHIA - Senior Mike Saparito, junior Chris Schneider, senior Amr Aldeen and sophomore Damien Boham set East Stroudsburg University's fourth school record of the weekend at the 119th Annual Penn Relays, breaking a 28-year old record in the men's 4x800m relay on Saturday at historic Franklin Field.
Saparito (1:54.1), Schneider (1:56.0), Aldeen (1:56.7) and Boham (1:54.6) ran a time of 7:41.19, breaking the record of 7:44.04 set by McClanahan, Headland, Appel and Perna in 1985.
ESU finished fifth of 16 schools in its heat and ahead of five Division I's, including New Hampshire and Army.
The Warriors also had three men's throwers compete in seniors Matt Tholis and Josh Hontz in the javelin and sophomore Travis Toth in the hammer.
Tholis, who has Division II's #3 mark at 226-5, finished fifth of eight athletes in the Men's Championship Javelin with a mark of 213-11. It was Tholis' fifth straight meet with a mark of 210 feet as he gears up for the NCAA DII Championships over Memorial Day weekend at Colorado State-Pueblo, where he was an All-American with a seventh-place finish last spring.
Hontz, who owns DII's #8 mark at 207-3, was 20th of 25 in the Men's College Javelin at 187-6. He was second of 31 at 210-10 in his first trip to Penn in 2011 before taking a redshirt last season.
Toth was fifth of 29 competitors in the Men's College Hammer with a mark of 179-5. He entered the weekend ranked #2 in the PSAC and #9 in DII with a provisional mark of 192-8.
The Warriors finished with four school records this weekend from the men's 4x8, the women's 4x200 (1:41.62 from Rachel Pierantozzi, Lauren Ventrella, Brittany Jones and Danielle Smith) on Friday, and senior Frank Fezza in the men's 10K (30:16.22) and senior Corinne Fitzgerald in the women's 3000m steeplechase (10:37.95) on Thursday.
ESU also got NCAA provisional marks from senior James Romano in the men's 3000m steeplechase and sophomore Christina O'Connor in the women's high jump.
