Warriors’ Five-Game Winning Streak Ends with 6-5 Loss at Philadelphia University

PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia University scored four runs in the first inning and went on to post a 6-5 win over East Stroudsburg University in non-conference baseball on Wednesday afternoon.

Junior DH Mike Tenaglia was 4-for-5 with two doubles and two runs and redshirt sophomore outfielder Andy Brandstetter was 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run to lead the offense for ESU (12-7), which had 14 hits and leads the PSAC with a .330 batting average.

Junior Jake Ruch was the Warriors' top pitcher in relief, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing one run on five hits with one strikeout. Redshirt sophomore Max Mueler pitched a scoreless ninth. Freshman John Armbrust made his first career start but the Rams (13-14-1) scored four runs on four hits in the first.

ESU got two runs back in the second when Tenaglia led off with a single, Brandstetter hit a two-out double and both runners scored on a single by junior SS Eric Linares.

The Warriors closed to 5-3 in the fourth as Tenaglia doubled and scored on a single by Brandstetter, but Philadelphia U came back with another run in the bottom half to go up 6-3.

ESU cut it to 6-4 on a sacrifice fly by senior 2B Joe Bennie in the eighth but left two runners on base. In the ninth, senior 1B Brian Ernst (2-for-4, run) hit a one-out single, Tenaglia doubled and Ernst scored on a groundout by junior catcher Eric Forth. Pinch-runner Keith Moyer advanced to third with the tying run with two outs, but Luke Floer locked down his fifth save.

ESU had 14 hits, Philadelphia U had 15, and both teams left 11 runners on base. Russell Trojan earned the win for the Rams, going 5.0 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits.

ESU, which had won five straight, takes on Mansfield in a four-game PSAC East series this weekend. The Warriors are 1-3 in the PSAC East after opening against Shippensburg on March 22-23 and host the Mounties on Saturday at 1 p.m.
