Box Score
DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Senior second baseman
Joe Bennie was 4-for-4, walked twice and opened the scoring with a grand slam for his team-leading fourth home run of the season to lead East Stroudsburg University to a 12-5 win at Mercy College in non-conference baseball on Tuesday afternoon.
Bennie's two-out, four-run blast to right center in the second inning opened the floodgates for a 13-hit attack for the Warriors (16-8).
Senior 1B
Brian Ernst was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored to reach two significant individual milestones, moving into ESU's career top 10 with 172 hits and 244 total bases. He is also tied for third with 109 RBI and sixth with 51 extra-base hits.
Ernst currently ranks 13th at ESU with 134 career strikeouts and is 10 away from entering the top 10. He would be the only player in school history in the top 10 in both hits and strikeouts, despite missing almost all of his sophomore year on the mound and several starts this season due to injury.
Junior OF
Chris Knott was 2-for-4 with four RBI, including his 10th career triple, to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Knott was 6-for-11 with six extra-base hits and six RBI against Mansfield last weekend.
After Bennie put ESU in front 4-0 in the second, Knott hit two-RBI triple (scoring Ernst and junior DH
Mike Tenaglia) in the third and was thrown out at home trying for an inside-the-park home run.
ESU added two runs in the fifth on an RBI double by Ernst and RBI single by Tenaglia. They finished their scoring with four in the eighth, including an RBI single by Ernst, two-RBI single by Knott and an RBI groundout by Brandstetter.
Freshman right-hander
Brandon Holup earned his first career win with 3.0 shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out one. Senior
Colin Kelly, senior
Mike Glassic and junior
Keith Moyer all worked 2.0 innings in relief.
ESU hosts Bloomfield (N.J.) for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Mitterling Field.
The Warriors, coming off a 3-1 series win over Mansfield, return to PSAC East action this weekend with a four-game set against defending NCAA Division II champion West Chester (16-9-1, 7-1). ESU is 4-4 in the PSAC East and hosts the first half of the series on Friday at 1 p.m.
