EAST STROUDSBURG - Gannon scored a pair of goals within 1:26 in the first half, lifting the Golden Knights to a 3-0 win over East Stroudsburg University in the PSAC East men's soccer opener for both schools on Friday afternoon at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
Niko Popovich scored in the 22nd minute and Skhosi Mgobozi tallied in the 24th minute for Gannon (1-2, 1-0), which was ranked No. 13 in the NSCAA Division II preseason poll before a pair of losses to strong teams to start the year.
Robbie Bennett added a goal in the 87th minute assisted by Sean Pike, the reigning PSAC Player of the Year.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Callum Hampson had five saves for ESU (0-3-1, 0-1), while Jason Barbarino was called on to make one save for Gannon. The Golden Knights had a 21-10 advantage in shots for the game and 14-2 in the first half.
ESU hosts Mercyhurst (2-1, 1-0) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. with the defending PSAC and Atlantic Region champion Lakers coming off a 3-1 win at West Chester on Friday.
