Toth Improves NCAA Provisional Mark, Warriors Win 11 Events at Kutztown

KUTZTOWN – Junior Travis Toth improved his NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the men's weight throw and East Stroudsburg University athletes won 11 events at the Kutztown Golden Bear Invitational on Friday night at O'Pake Fieldhouse.

Toth had a mark of 60-1 1/4, one inch better than his NCAA provisional of 60-0 1/4 in the season opener at Lehigh in December.

ESU's women had four winners in junior Danielle Smith (55m – 7.23), senior Colleen Murphy (500m – 1:22.97), senior Kim Wernerspach (3000m – 10:46.42) and junior Christina O'Connor (high jump – 5-3).

New PSAC qualifying performances came from Smith in the 55m dash, Wernerspach in the 3000m, and junior Liana Ercan (40-8 1/4) and freshman Alysha Menzies (40-5 1/2) in the weight throw.

Smith's time of 7.23 in the 55m dash is tied for third-best in school history. She holds the school record in the 60m dash in 7.66.

The men had seven winners – junior Damien Boham (500m – 1:06.78), junior Steve Ruch (1000m – 2:37.96), sophomore Seth Bailey (high jump – 6-6 3/4), junior Mike Smith (shot put – 49-3 1/2), Toth, freshman John Alston (heptathlon – 4,389 points) and the 4x800m relay  of freshman Dan Davis, junior Chris Ott, Ruch and senior Chris Schneider (8:31.64).

The Warriors had three new PSAC qualifiers in freshman La Treil Ridgeway in the triple jump (43-0 1/2), junior Casey Ciaston in the weight throw (48-8 1/4) and Alston in the long jump (21-8). Alston's score of 4,389 in the heptathlon is third in school history.

Other all-time top 10 performances came from Mike Smith in the shot put (8th – 49-3 1/2) and sophomore Corey Smith in the pole vault (9th – 14-11). Toth's mark of 60-1 1/4 in the weight throw ranks second in school history.

Bailey's 6-6 3/4 in the high jump followed an NCAA DII provisional mark of 6-8 3/4 at Lehigh in the season opener.
